Red Deer County crews attended fire at hotel in Gasoline Alley, firefighter injured after walkway collapse

Red Deer County Protective Services responded to a fire at the Howard Johnson by Wyndham hotel in Gasoline Alley after reports of a blaze in a room.

Crews arrived at 11:30 a.m. with one room fully in flames which spread to the walk way area above the fire.

Fire Chief at Red Deer County, Drayton Bussiere, said the blaze was mostly contained to the single room with some damage to the exterior of the building. There was also water and smoke damage to a total of six rooms.

No injuries were reported in the incident to civilians but a firefighter who attended the call had received minor injuries after falling through a floor in the hotel. A walkway had collapsed located above the room where there was a fire.

Red Deer Emergency Services also attended the call to provide assistance for a total of upwards of 30 firefighters on scene. There was an engine and a ladder truck from the city that were there followed by six trucks from the county.

“It was a pretty big response for a building of that size,” Bussiere said. “A single family residence is easy to deal with, with a truck or two but when you have a building that size, the potential is there for a pretty significant fire. We like to make sure we have lots of personnel on scene so we can handle it quickly.”

The official cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

“As always we’re appreciative of everybody adhering to our road closures and giving us room to work,” he added. “We were pretty successful with that on Saturday.”
