APR. 14 COUNCIL AMENDMENTS

Office and retail sales now principal use in Lacombe Light Industrial District

Apr 21, 2025 | 11:15 AM

As of Apr. 14, office and retail sales have been approved as principal uses in the Light Industrial District by Lacombe’s city council.

These amendments to the Land Use Bylaw (LUB) passed second and third reading during a regular meeting of council.

The changes were based on feedback from landowners and business investors. Council first passed a motion in December 2024 requesting administration to prepare LUB amendments to allow new uses within this district, adding office and retail sales as discretionary uses.

“Council is pleased to approve these LUB amendments to the Light Industrial District,” Mayor Grant Creasey said. “These changes will reduce red tape for business owners and the city and encourage more investment opportunities throughout our community.”

The city identified the following advantages to including office and retail sales in this district:

  • Some commercial businesses have expressed a desire to locate in Industrial Districts due to larger sized rental space opportunities than in Commercial Districts.
  • Allowing a broader range of businesses in the industrial area could provide flexibility to developers and businesses, helping to achieve business growth within the community. This is a goal of the city’s Strategic Plan on growing the community.
  • Allowing some retail businesses and office Uses in the light industrial area could provide convenient services to workers in the district.
  • Some types of retail businesses require outdoor storage, large parking areas or other design aspects that could be well suited in Industrial areas.

Residents were invited to an Open House on Jan. 30, 2025, to gather feedback prior to first reading of the LUB amendments.
