Red Deer Polytechnic (RDP) is continuing to recognize and share research creating institutional, industrial and societal impact by hosting events like the Student Science Conference and Agora Student Conference.

Recently, RDP hosted these two conferences to showcase the breadth of applied research that’s been conducted by students at the institution.

“As a polytechnic institution, we align education, training and applied research opportunities to create innovation ecosystem spaces that help address the needs of industry and communities,” said Lindsay Engel, vice-president of academic and student experience at RDP. “The Student Science Conference and Agora Conference are examples of unique student experiences offered at RDP that create positive economic and social impact and lead to meaningful employment.”

Attendees of the Student Science Conference could view over 28 poster projects highlighting a variety of subject areas as well as the objectives and fundings of each student researcher. Guests could also select from 20 formal student presentations, which showcased a range of scientific topics.

This conference also featured keynote speaker Dr. Michael T. Woodside, from the University of Alberta. He shared his research that found unique RNA structures in viruses that act as antiviral drug targets.

The Agora Conference showcased the creativity and academic work of students in humanities, social sciences, justice and social work programs through 40 research projects and 15 art installations.

The event also offered students an opportunity to build career skills, such as effective communication and knowledge dissemination. By combining academic achievement with professional development, the conference was intended to enrich student learning experiences and prepare them for future success.

Some of the work showcased at this conference will be published in the annual Agora Journal, putting student work in front of larger audience and providing them with the opportunity to gain experience in editing, fact-checking and relationship building with authors.

While these two conferences highlighted research conducted in specific academic disciplines at RDP, applied research occurs across the institution by students, faculty and staff.
