The Wetaskiwin RCMP arrested two individuals for drug and firearm related charges following a traffic stop this week.

On Tuesday, March 25, police received a report of an impaired driver and responded to the call.

Once on scene, Wetaskiwin General Duty Officers and the Wetaskiwin Crime Reduction Unit identified two people who left the vehicle and they were arrested.

After further investigation, police seized a sawed off rifle, 60 grams of methamphetamine, 14 grams of fentanyl, and unstamped cigarettes.

As a result a 33-year-old man from Wetaskiwin and a 27-year-old woman from Maskwacis were charged.

The man is facing charges for two counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking, driving while prohibited, breach of a firearm prohibition order, and five counts of firearms offences. In addition, the woman was charged with breach of a conditional sentence order, two counts of breaching a firearms prohibition order, and five counts of firearms offences.

They were both brought before a Justice of the Peace and remanded into custody. They are next set to appear at the Alberta Court of Justice in Wetaskiwin on March 27.
