RDP Athletics recap: March 21-22

This past week, the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Hockey team defeated the Briercrest College Clippers to win the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Men’s Hockey Championship. The RDP Dance team had an outstanding weekend at the Showtime Competition, receiving special recognition in several categories.

Here is a summary of the recent results:

Hockey

Kings vs Clippers | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre | Friday, March 21

The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Hockey team has joined elite company in ACAC Men’s Hockey. On Friday, the RDP Kings defeated the Briercrest College Clippers 3-1 in game four of the best-of-five final to win their third consecutive ACAC gold medal.

Since the 1965/1966 season, the SAIT Trojans, NAIT Ooks, MacEwan Griffins (now a member of U Sports) and RDP Kings have won three consecutive ACAC Men’s Hockey Championships.

On Friday, Ryland McNinch (Bachelor of Education Secondary Years) scored a pair of goals for the Polytechnic. Deegan Mofford, the North Star Sports Kings Player of the Game, recorded the game winning goal on the power play. He also assisted on the first goal. Kristian Lyon, who made 38 saves (0.974), was named ACAC Men’s Hockey Playoff MVP.

Dance

RDP Dance | Showtime Competition | Dow Centennial Centre | March 21-22

The Red Deer Polytechnic Dance team earned several honours at the Showtime Competition in Fort Saskatchewan.

The RDP Jazz team earned first, high gold and made the Final Showdown. The Polytechnic’s Hip Hop Group, Crown Crew, received a gold and second place. Red Deer Polytechnic’s Lyrical Group, Save Myself, solidified gold.

The Queens also delivered several noteworthy solo and duet performances. In tap dance, Red Deer’s Brynley Peters earned diamond, first place and a $500 scholarship to Motives Dance Company for preprofessional dance training. Makenna Evans (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) achieved gold and second place. Alexis DenHollander (Pharmacy Technician Diploma) picked up gold and third place. DenHollander and Reese Carriere earned high gold and second place.

The Red Deer Polytechnic Dance team will host the Central Alberta Dance Festival/Danceworks Competition from April 3-6 at the RDP Arts Centre.

RDP Athletics is grateful for the support from donors, sponsors, supporters and fans, along with the dedication from student-athletes, coaches and athletics staff during the 2024/2025 season.
