dangerous for birds and for you

‘Cover Your Vent’ campaign ongoing with Medicine River Wildlife Centre

Mar 20, 2025 | 7:19 PM

The Medicine River Wildlife Centre wants you to cover your vent!

Each spring, the wildlife centre, which is located near Spruce View, gets numerous calls about birds being stuck in exterior vents.

This often occurs due to nesting in uncovered vents and other dangerous cavities, and can result in babies being separated from their parents.

It can also be a fire hazard.

“Take a close look at your house and spot anywhere that might be attractive to nesting birds. Remember, those little songbirds can fit into some tiny spaces. Look for dryer vents, stove exhaust vents, bathroom exhaust vents, and chimneys,” the centre says.

“Have you had an RV stored away for the winter? Check the hitch and vents there too. Do you have deep wells by your basement windows? Ducklings, skunks, and muskrats regularly get trapped in window wells. Pick up a cover and protect those spaces now as spring is just around the corner, and so are migrating birds ready to set up homes.”

For any vent covers purchased at a Central Alberta Co-op location, 15 per cent will be donated to the wildlife centre. Types of vents include air intake hoods for dryers, vent caps for dryers, and bathroom exhaust vents.
