RDP Athletics recap: March 14-16

This past week, the RDP Queens Hockey team earned an Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) silver medal. The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Hockey team captured a two games to one lead in the ACAC Men’s Hockey Championship Final. The Queens Indoor Track team won gold at the ACAC Indoor Track Championships. The Kings Indoor Track team picked up bronze in Edmonton. The RDP Rodeo team had several top 10 performances in Olds.

Here is a summary of the recent results:

Hockey

RDP Queens vs Rustlers | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre | Friday, March 14

The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens dropped a 7-1 decision to the Lakeland College Rustlers in game four of the best-of-five ACAC Women’s Hockey Championship Final. The Rustlers won the series three games to one. The Queens solidified silver.

Kaedence Mollin (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) scored RDP’s lone goal and was named the North Star Sports Queens Player of the Game.

RDP Kings at Briercrest College Clippers | Friday, March 14

The Kings defeated the Clippers 3-2 in double overtime to win game one of the best-of-five ACAC Men’s Hockey Championship Final in Saskatchewan. Holden Knights and Alex Bernauer scored for the Kings during regulation time. Nolan Doell recorded the winning goal in overtime. Kristian Lyon (Business Administration General Management) made 60 saves in the Kings’ net.

RDP Kings at Briercrest College Clippers | Saturday, March 15

In game two, the Clippers blanked the Kings 5-0 to even up the series.

RDP Kings at Briercrest College Clippers | Sunday, March 16

The RDP Kings picked up a 2-1 victory over the Clippers to jump ahead two games to one in the best-of-five final. Deegan Mofford and Doell found the back of the net for the Polytechnic. Lyon made 37 saves.

  • Dawson Leroux – Academic All-Canadian, ACAC Men’s Hockey Second All-Conference team
  • Tanner Sklaruk – ACAC Men’s Hockey Second All-Conference team

Indoor track

ACAC Indoor Track Championships | U of A Pavilion | March 15-16

The Red Deer Polytechnic Indoor Track team capped off the season on a high note at the ACAC Indoor Track Championships in Edmonton. The RDP Queens earned gold (76 points), defeating second place SAIT (55 points) by 21 points. The Kings sealed bronze (36 points). In addition, individual RDP student-athletes and relay teams added three more silver and four bronze medals to their haul.

The Lethbridge Polytechnic Kodiaks Women’s team (54 points) captured bronze. The SAIT Trojans Men’s team (99 points) earned gold. The Lethbridge Polytechnic Kodiaks men (90 points) picked up silver.

Both Eiley Morrison and Zoey Longman contributed 16 points toward the Queens’ overall points. Morrison (7.93) earned silver in the women’s 60 m final. She (43.02) also solidified bronze in the women’s 300 m final. Sylvan Lake’s Longman (1:41.65) captured bronze in the women’s 600 m final.

In the women’s 1,500 m final, RDP’s Justine Larson (5:05.94) won bronze. Georgia Sawchuk (11:21.87) earned bronze in the women’s 3,000 m final. The RDP Queens (Morrison, Kammy Park, Alissa Berwick and Myah Cota) solidified silver in the women’s 4 x 200 m relay final (1:50.55), only 0.3 seconds behind Concordia University. The Queens (Larson, Cota, Longman and Loami Rautenbach) also won silver in the women’s 4 x 400 m relay final (4:12.18)

Both Mbagara Gacheru (Kinesiology, Fitness & Health) and Japhet Kipkosgei (University Arts) accumulated 11.5 points for the Kings. Gacheru (37.58) was fourth in the men’s 300 m final. The Kings (Andrew Warnick, Kipkosgei, Jordan Coen and Gacheru) 4 x 400 m relay team (3:42.40) wrapped up fourth.

  • Eiley Morrison, Zoey Longman – ACAC Women’s Indoor Track All-Conference team
  • Michael Schnare – ACAC Indoor Track Coach of the Year

Rodeo

Olds Spring Rodeo | March 15-16

The Red Deer Polytechnic Rodeo team had another strong weekend. Brienna Leer (14.53) finished first in Barrel Racing on Saturday. Taylor Cholach (14.71) was eighth.

On the opening day, Elyse Terpsma (21.16) placed third in Pole Bending. She ranked second on Sunday with a time of 20.9 seconds.

Garrett Cullum (7.5) was fifth in Steer Wrestling on Saturday. Ryan Collett (7.4) solidified second in Steer Wrestling on Sunday.

On Sunday, Collett (11.9) was first in Tie Down Roping.

Casey Thomson continued to have outstanding rides in Bareback Riding. The Electrician apprentice was first on both Saturday (75 points) and Sunday (73 points).

In Team Roping, RDP’s Cullum (heeler) teamed up with Southern Alberta Intercollegiate Rodeo Team’s Wyatt Broderson (header) to place second (8.2 seconds). Collett (heeler), from the RDP Kings, and Chloe Lanouette (header), from Olds College of Agriculture & Technology, finished 10th (25.5 seconds) on Sunday.
