RDP Athletics Recap: Mar. 7-9

This past week, the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Volleyball team won gold at the 2025 Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Men’s Volleyball National Championship. The RDP Queens Hockey team picked up one win against the Rustlers in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Women’s Hockey Championship Final. The Kings Hockey team defeated the SAIT Trojans in the semi-finals. The Red Deer Polytechnic Dance team had strong performances at Crown Quest. The RDP Kings Futsal team earned bronze at the ACAC Men’s Futsal Championship. The Red Deer Polytechnic Rodeo team achieved several top 10 results at the Lakeland Spring Rodeo.

Here is a summary of the recent results:

Volleyball

CCAA Men’s Volleyball National Championship | Niverville, Manitoba | March 5-8

The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Volleyball team did not drop a single set en route to gold at the CCAA Men’s Volleyball National Championship.

In Wednesday’s quarter-final match, the RDP Kings Volleyball team swept the host Providence Pilots (25- 23, 25-15 and 25-21). Red Deer’s Colby Nemeth contributed 13 kills. Owen Langberg, a six-foot-six middle, recorded 11 kills, four blocks, one dig and one assist for the Kings. Rocky Mountain House’s Langberg was named the Kings Player of the Match.

Then, the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings earned a three-set victory over the Humber Hawks in the national semi-finals (26-24, 25-23 and 25-10). With 12 kills, seven digs, four aces, one assist and one block, Nemeth (Bachelor of Commerce) was recognized as the RDP Kings Player of the Game.

In the national final, the Kings cruised to a three-set victory over the Douglas Royals (25-19, 25-17 and 25-18). Setter Brett Theise, the Kings Player of the Match, contributed 25 assists, four digs, three blocks and one ace. Nemeth added nine kills.

With this victory, the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Volleyball team has won 14 national championships, which is the most in the CCAA.

Hockey

Queens at Lakeland College | ACAC Women’s Hockey Championship | Friday, March 7

The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens Hockey team defeated the Lakeland College Rustlers 1-0 in game one of the best-of-five ACAC Women’s Hockey Championship Final. Kaedence Mollin (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) scored the Queens’ lone goal. Saskatoon’s Tora Ward made 39 saves to earn the shutout.

The Rustlers evened up the series with a 5-1 decision over the Queens in game two. Emily Hourie (Bachelor of Kinesiology) scored for the Polytechnic.

RDP Queens at Lakeland College | ACAC Women’s Hockey Championship | Sunday, March 9

The Lakeland College Rustlers downed the RDP Queens 4-1 to jump ahead two games to one in the final. Grace Millar, a first-year forward from Saskatoon, picked up the Queens’ goal.

RDP Kings at SAIT Trojans | ACAC Men’s Hockey Semi-finals | Friday, March 7

The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Hockey team defeated the SAIT Trojans 4-3 in game one of the best-ofthree semi-final. Chase Haygarth, Kasey Hiemstra and Clay Sleeva scored during regulation time for the Kings. Sleeva (Business Certificate) added the winning goal in overtime. Kristian Lyon made 36 saves in the Kings’ net.

RDP Kings vs SAIT Trojans | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre | Saturday, March 8

The RDP Kings downed the Trojans 4-3 in game two of the best-of-three semi-final, advancing to the ACAC Men’s Hockey Championship Final against the Briercrest College Clippers. Alex Bernauer, Ryland McNinch, Jarod Newell and Nolan Doell scored for RDP. Lyon and Evan Fradette combined to make 24 saves in goal for the Polytechnic.

Dance

RDP Dance | Crown Quest | RDP Arts Centre Main Stage | Saturday, March 8

The Red Deer Polytechnic Dance team hosted a successful and entertaining Crown Quest on main campus. There were many notable performances from RDP student-athletes.

The Polytechnic’s “Save Myself” Lyrical group achieved the Overall Crown Team Group Award. Hailey Warren (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) earned a Stage Presence Award. Red Deer’s Brynley Peters (Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences) received a Standout Solo Award.

The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings earned bronze at the ACAC Men’s Futsal Championship.

Rodeo

RDP Rodeo | Lakeland Spring Rodeo | March 8-9

The Red Deer Polytechnic Rodeo team achieved several top 10 performances at the Lakeland Spring Rodeo.

Longview, Alberta’s Casey Thomson captured first place in Bareback on both Saturday (69 points) and Sunday (72 points). On the opening day, Thomson (heeler) joined forces with Lakeland College’s Emily Rumpf (header) and solidified third in Team Roping (8.2 seconds).

On Sunday, Taylor Cholach (Social Work) placed sixth in both Barrel Racing (14.57 seconds) and Breakaway Roping (3.2 seconds).
