RDP Athletics recap: Feb. 28-Mar. 2

This past week, the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings and Queens Hockey teams won their playoff series and advanced to the next round. The RDP Kings and Queens Curling teams earned medals at the 2025 Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA)/Curling Canada College Championships. The Queens Basketball team put forth a good effort, but dropped both games at the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Women’s Basketball Championship. The Red Deer Polytechnic Dance team had strong performances in Calgary. The Indoor Track team achieved many top three results at Running Room Grand Prix #3.

Hockey

RDP Queens at NAIT Ooks | Friday, February 28

The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens Hockey team was edged 3-2 by the NAIT Ooks in game one of the bestof-three semi-final. Molly Flynn (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) and Jailyn Bablitz (Bachelor of Education Elementary) scored for the Queens.

Queens vs Ooks | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre | Saturday, March 1

The RDP Queens defeated the Ooks 3-2 at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre, evening up the series. Rylee Mepham, Flynn and Camryn Ward scored for the Polytechnic. Tora Ward, a second-year goaltender from Saskatoon, made 29 saves (0.935) in the Queens’ net.

RDP Queens at NAIT Ooks | Sunday, March 2

The Queens defeated the Ooks 6-1 in game three, advancing to the ACAC Women’s Hockey Final. Mia McGregor, Kyla Hansel, Mepham, Arilyn Toews, Julie Wagner and Bablitz recorded goals for the Queens. Tora Ward (Bachelor of Education) stopped 31 shots (0.969).

The RDP Queens will play the Lakeland College Rustlers for gold.

Kings vs Vikings | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre | Friday, February 28

The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Hockey team picked up a 4-3 victory over the University of Alberta Augustana Vikings in game one of the best of three quarter-final series. Nolan Doell (Bachelor of Education Middle Years) had a hat trick for the Kings. Tanner Sklaruk added a goal for RDP. Kristian Lyon, a fourthyear goaltender from Langley, made 22 saves in the Kings’ net.

RDP Kings at U of A Augustana Vikings | Saturday, March 1

The Kings downed the Vikings 3-2 in Camrose and advanced to the next round of the playoffs. Sklaruk, Deegan Mofford and Alex Bernauer scored for the Kings. Lyon (Business Administration General Management) turned aside 23 shots.

The RDP Kings and SAIT Trojans will meet in semi-finals.

Curling

CCAA/Curling Canada College Championships | Lethbridge | February 24-28

The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens Curling team earned a silver medal at the 2025 Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA)/Curling Canada College Championships in Lethbridge. Nicole Homan, Morgan Deschiffart, Cuyler Desormeau, Kaylee Raniseth and Cassidy Blair (spare) represented the Queens.

The Kings, comprised of Aiden Berube, Reece Brigley, Jaden Morlock, Nick Woznesensky and Rhett Whittmire (spare), won bronze.

The RDP Queens (7-0) finished first during round robin play. They defeated the Humber Hawks 11-2, PACWEST 9-1, Mohawk Mountaineers 10-1, SAIT Trojans 7-4, Fanshawe Falcons 5-3, Assiniboine Cougars 9-1 and Concordia Thunder 8-1.

In the women’s semi-finals, the RDP Queens defeated the SAIT Trojans 9-4. Then PACWEST picked up a 6-4 decision over the Queens in the CCAA Women’s Curling National Championship game.

The RDP Kings went 5-2 during round robin play. They defeated the NAIT Ooks 6-3, Gaillards du Cégep de l’Abitibi-Témiscamingue 8-3, SAIT Trojans 6-4, Humber Hawks 7-4 and Assiniboine Cougars 7-3. The Kings lost to the Mohawk Mountaineers 9-4 and Sault Cougars 4-3.

The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings were edged 4-3 by SAIT in the men’s semi-finals. In the bronze medal game, the Kings earned an 8-2 decision over the Sault Cougars.

Basketball

Queens | ACAC Women’s Basketball Championship | The King’s University | February 28 – March 2

The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens Basketball team was dropped 77-52 by The King’s University Eagles on Friday. Both Rachel Harvey and Salome Nuako scored 16 points for RDP.

On Saturday, the NAIT Ooks picked up a 77-52 decision over the Queens. Harvey accumulated 20 points. Avery Stypula added 11 points for the Polytechnic. With the setback, the Queens were eliminated from the postseason.

Prior to the start of the championship, Harvey was named to the ACAC Women’s Basketball South Second All-Conference team.

Dance

MRU Cubs/True West Competition | Rocky Ridge YMCA | Sunday, March 2

The Red Deer Polytechnic Dance team had a strong weekend at the MRU Cubs/True West Competition in Calgary. The Polytechnic’s Hip Hop team received platinum and placed in the final five showcase. Both RDP’s Jazz and Lyrical teams achieve high gold.

Indoor track

Running Room Grand Prix #3 | Lethbridge Polytechnic | Saturday, March 1

The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings and Queens Indoor Track teams continued to perform at or near the top of the Conference at Running Room Grand Prix #3 in Lethbridge.

In the women’s 60 m final, Eiley Morrison (7.99) placed second. Emily Barrit (1:49.81) was third in the women’s 600 m final. Justine Larson (5:18.21) ranked third in the women’s 1,500 m. Morrison (44.14) also placed third in the women’s 300 m. Hadley Guenther, Barrit, Melissa Ray and Larson (4:38.63) were second in the women’s 4 x 400 m relay.

In the men’s 300 m, Mbagara Gacheru (38.00) was third. The RDP Kings (3:53.60) finished second in the men’s 4 x 400 m relay. Japhet Kipkosgei, Leland Lusk, Owen House and Taelum Henfrey comprised the relay team.
