This week in RDP Athletics: Feb. 28 – March 2

This week, the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings and Queens Hockey teams will begin the first round of the playoffs. The RDP Kings and Queens Curling teams will compete at the 2025 Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA)/Curling Canada College Championships. The Queens Basketball team will vie for a medal at the ACAC Women’s Basketball Championship in Edmonton. The Red Deer Polytechnic Dance team will compete in Calgary. The Indoor Track team will participate in Running Room Grand Prix #3.

Here is a summary of the upcoming competition:

Hockey

RDP Queens at NAIT Ooks | Friday, February 28 | 7 p.m.

The third place Red Deer Polytechnic Queens Hockey team (18W-6L-1 OTL) will challenge the second seed NAIT Ooks (19W-6L-0 OTL) on the road in a best-of-three semi-final. During the regular season, the RDP Queens won three of the five games against the Ooks.

Queens vs Ooks | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre | Saturday, March 1 | 7 p.m.

The RDP Queens will host the Ooks at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre in the second game of the series.

RDP Queens at NAIT Ooks | Sunday, March 2 | 6 p.m.

If necessary, the Queens and Ooks will face-off in the third and deciding game in Edmonton.

Kings vs Vikings | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre | Friday, February 28 | 7 p.m.

The third place Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Hockey team (13W-8L-1 OTL-2 SOL) will host the sixth seed University of Alberta Augustana Vikings (10W-12L-2 OTL- 0 SOL) in game one of the best-of three opening round series. In the regular season, the Kings won all four games against the Vikings.

RDP Kings at U of A Augustana Vikings | Saturday, March 1 | 2 p.m.

The Kings and Vikings will play game two in Camrose.

Kings vs Vikings | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre | Sunday, March 2 | 7 p.m.

If necessary, the RDP Kings and U of A Augustana Vikings will complete the series in Red Deer.

Curling | CCAA/Curling Canada College Championships | Lethbridge | February 24-28

The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings and Queens Curling teams will compete at the 2025 Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA)/Curling Canada College Championships in Lethbridge.

The RDP Queens enter the championships as ACAC gold medalists. The Kings earned silver at the ACAC Curling Championships held at the Pidherney Centre in Red Deer.

Queens Basketball | ACAC Women’s Basketball Championship | The King’s University | February 28 – March 2

The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens Basketball team (12-9) will play The King’s University Eagles (18-2) on Friday, February 28 at 6 pm in Edmonton. During the regular season, the Queens ranked fourth in the ACAC Women’s Basketball South Division. The Eagles placed first in the North Division.

This year, the King’s University Eagles downed the RDP Queens 84-72 in their lone conference game. Jayden Demchuk led the Queens with 18 points.

The result of the Queens’ opening game will determine who and when they play next.

Dance | MRU Cubs/True West Competition | Rocky Ridge YMCA | Sunday, March 2

The Red Deer Polytechnic Dance team will compete at the MRU Cubs/True West Competition in Calgary.

Indoor Track | Running Room Grand Prix #3 | Lethbridge Polytechnic | Saturday, March 1 | 9 a.m.

The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings and Queens Indoor Track teams will hone their skills at Running Room Grand Prix #3 in Lethbridge.

This year, the Queens have displayed top-tier talent and team depth with consecutive first place finishes at Running Room Grand Prix #1 and #2. The Kings placed fourth and third respectively at Grand Prix #1 and #2.
