RDP Athletics recap: Feb. 21-23

This past week, the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Volleyball team won gold at the ACAC Men’s Volleyball Championship. The Queens Volleyball team sealed bronze in Camrose. The Kings and Queens Hockey teams wrapped up regular season competition with back-to-back victories. The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Futsal squad qualified for the ACAC Championship. The Queens Futsal team missed the postseason.

Here is a summary of the recent results:

Volleyball

ACAC Women’s Volleyball Championship | U of A Augustana | February 20-22

The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens Volleyball team earned bronze at the ACAC Women’s Volleyball Championship.

The RDP Queens swept the NAIT Ooks in their opening match (25-21, 25-16 and 25-22) on Thursday. Lauren Junck led the Queens with 14 kills (0.250).

On Friday, the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens dropped a four-set decision to the Lakeland College Rustlers (29-27, 16-25, 20-25 and 12-25). Setter Maria Brouwer recorded 26 assists, 11 digs, two kills and one block for RDP.

In the bronze medal match, the Queens defeated The King’s University Eagles in straight sets (29-27, 25-23 and 25-21). Junck powered the Queens’ offence with 16 kills. Libero Francesca Sandini had 15 digs and three assists.

ACAC Awards for the RDP Queens

ACAC Men’s Volleyball Championship | Lakeland College | February 20-22

The RDP Kings Volleyball team won its 21st gold medal at the ACAC Men’s Volleyball Championship held in Lloydminster.

On Thursday, the Kings opened the championship with a sweep over the University of Alberta Augustana Vikings (25-19, 25-21 and 25-13). Colby Nemeth led the Kings with 12 kills (0.526).

The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings downed the host Lakeland College Rustlers in straight sets on Friday (25-20, 25-23 and 25-17), advancing to the gold medal match. Owen Langberg contributed six kills and two blocks.

In Saturday’s final, the RDP Kings defeated the Lethbridge Polytechnic Kodiaks in four sets (25-23, 22-25, 25-16 and 25-18). Setter Brett Theise accumulated 31 assists, two digs, one block and one service ace.

The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings will compete at the 2025 Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Men’s Volleyball National Championship from March 5-8. The Providence Pilots will host the championship in Niverville, Manitoba.

Hockey

Queens at Olds College Broncos | Thursday, February 20

The RDP Queens Hockey team defeated the Broncos 5-1 in Olds. Captain Kaedence Mollin (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) recorded a hat trick for the Queens. Alli Soyko and Addison Longmore added goals for RDP. Goaltender Tora Ward turned aside 13 Broncos’ shots (0.929).

Queens vs Broncos | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre | Saturday, February 22

In their final regular season game, the third seed Red Deer Polytechnic Queens (18W-6L-1 OTL) earned a 2-0 shutout victory over the fifth place Broncos (6W-18L-1 OTL). Wembley’s Arilyn Toews and Kitimat’s Camryn Ward found the back of the net for the Queens. Netminder Izzy Palumbo stopped all 17 shots in the Polytechnic’s net.

The RDP Queens will face the NAIT Ooks in the first round of the ACAC Women’s Hockey Championship.

RDP Kings at Portage College Voyageurs | Friday, February 21

The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Hockey team convincingly defeated the Portage College Voyageurs 14-3. Nolan Doell (two), Ryland McNinch, Sean Michalevich, Clay Sleeva (two), Deegan Mofford (three), Holden Knights (four) and Liam Stalwick scored for RDP. St. Albert’s Evan Fradette made 16 saves in the Kings’ net.

RDP at Portage College | Saturday, February 22

The third place RDP Kings (13W-8L-1 OTL-2 SOL) picked up a 7-3 decision over the Voyageurs (4W-19L-1 OTL-0 SOL). Mofford, Alex Bernauer (three), Tyson Janzen, Kody Willick and Doell recorded goals for the Kings. Goaltender Kristian Lyon (Business Administration – General Management) stopped 34 shots from the Voyageurs.

Portage College finished seventh and missed the playoffs.

The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings will play the University of Alberta Augustana Vikings in the opening round of the ACAC Men’s Hockey Championship.

Futsal

ACAC Women’s Second South Regional | Olds College of Agriculture & Technology | February 22-23

Queens 4 – 4 Ambrose University Lions

RDP Queens 3 – 4 Medicine Hat College Rattlers

Queens 4 – 5 Lethbridge Polytechnic Kodiaks

RDP Queens 2 – 8 SAIT Trojans

After both South Regionals, the Queens (2-6-2) ranked fifth in the ACAC Women’s Futsal South Division and missed the playoffs.

After the weekend, the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings (6-3-1) placed second in the South Division and qualified for the ACAC Men’s Futsal Championship. The Lakeland College Rustlers will host the championship in Lloydminster from March 7-9, 2025.
