WEEKEND RESULTS

RDP Athletics recap: Feb. 14-16

This past week, both the Kings and Queens Indoor Track teams finished among the top three squads at Running Room Grand Prix #2. Both Volleyball teams defeated the Olds College Broncos. The Queens Hockey squad shutout the Medicine Hat College Rattlers twice. The Kings Hockey team dropped a pair of close contests to the Briercrest College Clippers. The Queens Basketball squad earned two victories over the Broncos. The Kings Basketball team split its weekend series with Olds College of Agriculture & Technology.

Here is a summary of the recent results:

Indoor track

Grand Prix #2 | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre | Saturday, February 15

The Red Deer Polytechnic Indoor Track team had a strong outing at Running Room Grand Prix #2 held at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre. The RDP Queens placed first (68 points). The Kings ranked third (33 points).

The Lethbridge Polytechnic Kodiaks Women’s team (44 points) was second and the Concordia University Thunder Women (33 points) followed in third. The Kodiaks Men’s team (72 points) was first and the SAIT Trojans Men (40 points) solidified second place.

There were many notable individual and relay performances from RDP student-athletes. The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens (Alissa Berwick, Eiley Morrison, Kammy Park and Loami Rautenbach) earned top spot in the women’s 4 x 200 m relay (1:51.47). The Queens (Justine Larson, Rautenbach, Myah Cota and Zoey Longman) won the 4 x 400 m relay (4:14.82).

In the women’s 600 m, Rautenbach (1:42.84) and Longman (1:44.69) placed second and third respectively. Larson solidified third in the women’s 1,000 m (3:13.78) and second in the 1,500 m (5:19.89). Georgia Sawchuk (11:41.17) finished third in the women’s 3,000 m.

The Kings (Andrew Warnick, Japhet Kipkosgei, Jordan Coen and Mbagara Gacheru) finished second in the men’s 4 x 400 m relay. Coen was third in the men’s 1,000 m (2:41.65) and first in the 1,500 m (4:28.47).

Lethbridge Polytechnic will host Running Room Grand Prix #3 on Saturday, March 1.

Volleyball

RDP Queens at Olds College | Friday, February 14

The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens Volleyball team swept the Olds College Broncos (25-21, 25-23 and 25-20). Sarah Mistol (Bachelor of Education Secondary) led the Polytechnic with 10 kills.

Queens vs Broncos | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre | Saturday, February 15

The second place RDP Queens (13-6) defeated the seventh seed Olds College Broncos (3-16) in three sets (25-20, 25-17 and 25-22). Libero Francesca Sandini, a fourth-year student-athlete from West Vancouver, had 17 digs and one assist for the Queens.

The RDP Queens, Briercrest College Clippers (13-6), Ambrose University Lions (12-7) and SAIT Trojans (11-8) have qualified for the postseason from the South Division.

Red Deer Polytechnic Kings at Olds College | Friday, February 14

The first place Kings Volleyball team earned a three set victory over the Broncos (27-25, 25-18 and 27-25). Colby Nemeth (17 kills) and Brett Lower (11 kills) helped to power the Kings’ offence.

Kings vs Broncos | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre | Saturday, February 15

In the final regular season match, the RDP Kings (18-1) swept the third place Broncos (10-9) at home (25-15, 27-25 and 25-17). Nicholas Possingham contributed seven kills, seven digs, two blocks, two aces and one assist for RDP.

The Kings, Lethbridge Polytechnic Kodiaks (17-2), Broncos and Briercrest College Clippers (9-10) have advanced to the playoffs from the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Men’s Volleyball South Division.

Hockey

Queens at Medicine Hat College | Friday, February 14

The third place RDP Queens Hockey team blanked the Rattlers 7-0. Wembley, Alberta’s Arilyn Toews scored twice. Sarah Raymond, Tasha Barsby, Jailyn Bablitz, Molly Flynn and Rylee Mepham added singles for the Queens. Izzy Palumbo (Bachelor of Commerce), Queens goaltender, turned aside 21 shots for the shutout.

Queens at Medicine Hat College | Saturday, February 15

The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens (16W-6L-1 OTL) defeated the sixth place Rattlers (2W-19L-2 OTL) by a 3-0 margin. Allie Soyko, Flynn and Toews scored for the Polytechnic. Tora Ward (Bachelor of Education) made 19 saves in the Queens’ net.

RDP Kings vs Clippers | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre | Friday, February 14

The fourth place Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Hockey team dropped a 4-2 decision to the Briercrest College Clippers. Tanner Sklaruk (Open Studies) and Ty Ettinger (Bachelor of Education Secondary) had the Kings’ goals.

RDP Kings vs Clippers | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre | Saturday, February 15

The RDP Kings (11W-8L-2 OTL-1 SOL) were downed 6-4 by the first place Clippers (17W-4L-1 OTL-0 SOL). Alex Bernauer (Business Diploma) scored twice for RDP. Dawson Leroux and Deegan Mofford added goals for the Kings.

The RDP Kings have already qualified for the postseason.

Basketball

Queens vs Broncos | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre | Friday, February 14

The fourth place Red Deer Polytechnic Queens Basketball team defeated the Olds College Broncos 72-39. Rachel Harvey led the Queens with 21 points.

RDP Queens at Olds College | Saturday, February 15

The RDP Queens (11-9) earned an 89-54 victory against the eighth seed Broncos (2-19) in Olds. Zoey Longman, a second-year Queens guard, contributed 24 points. Sherwood Park’s Salome Nuako recorded a double-double (23 points and 10 rebounds) for RDP.

The Queens, SAIT Trojans (20-1), St. Mary’s University Lightning (16-5) and Briercrest College Clippers (12-9) have qualified for the playoffs from the South Division. The King’s University Eagles will host the 2025 ACAC Women’s Basketball Championship from February 28 to March 2.

RDP Kings vs Broncos | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre | Friday, February 14

The seventh place Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Basketball team was downed 78-67 by the Broncos at home. Cole Wicker (Bachelor of Education) accumulated 21 points and six rebounds for the Kings.

Kings at Olds College | Saturday, February 15

The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings (7-14) defeated the sixth seed Broncos (8-13) by 13 points (87-74) on the road. Wicker had 22 points. Both Jose Mauro (Business Certificate) and Deandre Rowe (University Arts) scored 17 points for RDP.

The Kings missed the playoffs.
