RDP Athletics recap: Feb. 7-9

This past week, all three Red Deer Polytechnic teams earned medals at the ACAC Curling Championships held at the Pidherney Centre.

Both RDP basketball squads were downed by the Briercrest College Clippers at home.

The Queens hockey team defeated the SAIT Trojans twice.

The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings volleyball team picked up a pair of victories while the Queens volleyball team was edged in Saskatchewan.

Here is a summary of the recent competition:

ACAC Curling Championships | Pidherney Centre | February 7-9

The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings, Queens and Mixed Curling teams had strong performances in front of their home fans at the ACAC Curling Championships.

The RDP Queens won ACAC gold after downing the Concordia University Thunder 5-2 in the final. The SAIT Trojans Women’s team defeated the Lakeland College Rustlers 10-3 for bronze.

The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings picked up silver. The SAIT Trojans defeated the Kings 7-6 to seal gold. The NAIT Ooks Men’s team earned bronze with a 7-1 result over the Lakeland College Rustlers.

The RDP Mixed Curling team also earned silver. The Concordia University Thunder Mixed Curling team defeated the RDP squad 6-5 in the final. The SAIT Trojans Mixed Curling team picked up a 7-1 decision over the Lakeland College Rustlers for bronze.

The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings and Queens will compete at the 2025 Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA)/Curling Canada College Championships held February 24-28 at Lethbridge Curling Club. Collegiate Mixed Curling teams don’t compete at nationals.

ACAC Curling Awards

Delburne’s Kaylee Raniseth (Queens skip), a fourth-year member of the RDP Curling program, was recognized as the 2024/2025 ACAC Female Curler of the Year.

Brad Hamilton was named the ACAC Curling Coach of the Year. Hamilton, who has been the RDP Curling Head Coach since 2010, has also been named the ACAC Curling Coach of the Year in 2016, 2019 and 2022.

Teryn Herder (lead) was selected to ACAC Mixed Curling All-Conference team. Herder (Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences) is a second-year student-athlete from Red Deer County.

Basketball

Queens vs Clippers | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre | Friday, February 7

The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens Basketball team fell 66-61 to the Briercrest College Clippers. Jayden Demchuk (Practical Nurse Diploma) recorded 20 points and 11 rebounds for RDP.

The fourth seed RDP Queens (10-9) were defeated 51-45 by the Clippers (13-5). The Queens shot 70 per cent from the free-throw line. The Briercrest College Clippers sit third in the ACAC Women’s Basketball South Division.

The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Basketball team was downed by five points (116-111) by the Briercrest College Clippers. Deandre Rowe (University Arts) led the Kings with 31 points and 10 rebounds.

The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings (6-13) lost 93-89 to the top seed Clippers (17-1). Leduc’s Felix Webb contributed 14 points in only 12 minutes for the Kings.

The Kings are seventh in the South Division.

Hockey

Queens vs Trojans | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre | Friday, February 7

The RDP Queens Hockey team defeated the SAIT Trojans 2-1 in overtime. Mia McGregor (Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences) opened the scoring and Emily Hourie (Bachelor of Kinesiology) had the game winner for the Polytechnic. Izzy Palumbo made 17 saves in the Queens’ net.

The third place Red Deer Polytechnic Queens (14W-6L-1 OTL) earned a 5-1 decision over the fourth seed Trojans (5W-11L-3 OTL-2 SOL) in Calgary. Arilyn Toews, Fiona Sirovyak, Kaedence Mollin, Rylee Mepham and Avery Winchell scored for the Queens. Saskatoon’s Tora Ward turned aside 25 shots from SAIT.

Volleyball

RDP Queens at Briercrest College | Friday, February 7

The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens Volleyball team dropped a four-set decision to the Briercrest College Clippers in Saskatchewan (23-25, 20-25, 25-21 and 12-25). Ponoka’s Autumn Roos led the Queens’ attack, recording 12 kills.

The third seed RDP Queens (11-6) were shaded by the Clippers (12-5) in five sets (25-20, 15-25, 22-25, 25- 20 and 5-15). Lauren Junck (Bachelor of Arts in Psychology) powered the Queens’ offence with 14 kills.

The Briercrest College Clippers rank second in the South Division.

RDP Kings at Briercrest College Clippers | Friday, February 7

The first place Kings Volleyball team earned a four-set victory over the Briercrest College Clippers (25-22, 17-25, 25-15 and 25-15). Kings libero Bradley Noskey (Business Diploma) accumulated 15 digs, three assists and one block.

The RDP Kings (16-1) swept the Clippers (25-14, 25-16 and 25-16). Rocky Mountain House’s Owen Langberg had three of the Kings’ eight service aces.

The Clippers (9-8) sit fourth in the South Division.
