SHALLOW DEPTHS, WELL OXYGENATED

Gull Lake named as a top ice fishing destination in Canada

Feb 5, 2025 | 5:08 PM

Alberta’s Gull Lake has ranked as a top ice fishing destination in Canada, landing in sixth place out of nine locations named in the FishingBooker blog.

Gull Lake is known for having shallow depths, reaching a maximum of 26 feet, while remaining well oxygenated; Lacombe County’s Environmental Coordinator Jordan Nakonechny says this combination creates a suitable sport fishing habitat.

Species found in the lake include lake whitefish, walleye, northern pike, burbot and yellow perch.

Catch and release protocols are in effect for northern pike year-round and for the rest of the lake’s species from Feb. 1-Mar. 31. Otherwise, regulations allow fishers to keep one walleye between 45-50 cm, five yellow perch, three lake whitefish, and two burbot.

For the best results in your Gull Lake fishing, the site recommends bead-head nymphs paired with small worms to reel in these species quickly.

FishingBooker representatives say it’s the world’s largest platform for booking fishing trips and has been ranking the top ice fishing destinations for five years.

The group calls Gull Lake a “rewarding” spot despite busy winter weekends, as the Waskasoo Park trails and nearby Canyon Ski Resort provide other winter activity options as well.
