Reduce population

First annual Coyote Classic underway in Stettler County

The first annual Coyote Classic began today in Stettler County and will continue through Sunday.

Organized by Storm Mountain Outfitters in Stettler, the event is meant to reduce the coyote population in the County over the two-day hunt.

It is a non-profit event with all the proceeds going towards prizes which includes $2,500 to the team that returns with the most Coyotes. The second placed team will receive $1,500 followed by $1,000 for third place.

There are also prizes for the heaviest coyote, mangiest coyote, and the coyote with the nicest fur. Organizers charged $250 per team and a banquet was also held on Saturday night.

Meanwhile, a Canadian organization dedicating to raise awareness to wildlife conservation issues voiced their displeasure with the event in a Facebook post earlier this month.

“It is with deep anger and heartbreak that we share this news. The “1st Annual Coyote Classic,” a coyote killing contest, has been announced months after Alberta’s ‘Top Wolf Killing Contest,” as stated in the post.

“Organized by Storm Mountain Outfitters out of Stettler, Alberta, the event promises cash prizes to those who return the most coyote pelts, all at the expense of innocent animals. Despite the controversial nature of this contest, it has received little media attention, and we wanted to ensure you were informed.”
