Central Alberta BREWD initiative launches business survey

Jan 24, 2025 | 10:41 AM

Following a successful launch event this week, a new Business Retention, Expansion, and Workforce Development initiative (BREWD) is launching a survey.

The BREWD was announced late last year, but held their launch event in Penhold on Thursday.

Led by a group called Central Alberta First, the initiative looks to address challenges faced by local businesses, and to develop strategies to promote growth.

“We believe that the insights and experiences of our local businesses are invaluable,” said John Powell, Economic Development Officer for the Town of Innisfail. “The BREWD initiative is an opportunity for business owners to voice their needs and contribute directly to the creation of an action plan that will benefit the entire community.”

Key objectives of the BREWD initiative:

  • Assess Local Business Needs:   Accurately evaluate the challenges and opportunities within the business community, including workforce development issues.
  • Provide Immediate Support:   Offer resources and information to address urgent business concerns identified through the survey.
  • Facilitate Workforce Planning:   Encourage strategic human resource planning to adapt to the region’s evolving labor market.
  • Enhance Collaboration:   Strengthen cooperation among businesses, government agencies, and economic development organizations.

Participation in the survey is crucial, organizers say, with hopes being that they get at least 600 responses.

“Active participation from our business community is essential,” said Kelly Kierluk, General Manager, Community Futures Central Alberta. “The more input we receive, the better we can tailor our efforts to meet the specific needs of our local economy.”

The City of Red Deer, Red Deer County, and Red Deer Polytechnic area also part of the initiative, along with many other partners.

“Through this initiative, Red Deer Polytechnic is pleased to partner with organizations from across the region to work together to support the region’s economic landscape,” says Patrick Machacek, Vice President, Development and Partnerships at Red Deer Polytechnic.

“The information we receive will assist us at Red Deer Polytechnic to continue growing industry-relevant education, training and applied research opportunities that contributes to Alberta’s productivity and competitive workforce.”

The survey being launched runs from Jan. 23 to Feb. 28; it and other information about the BREWD initiative can be found at centralalbertafirst.ca.
