11-game losing streak

Rebels give up third period lead in OT loss to Blades

Jan 17, 2025 | 8:42 PM

The Saskatoon Blades scored three unanswered goals including the game-winning goal in overtime to beat the Red Deer Rebels 4-3 on Friday night.

Blades forward Hayden Harsanyi scored the game winner less than a minute into the extra frame at the SaskTel Centre in Saskatoon.

This came after Cooper Williams scored back-to-back goals in the third period to tie the game.

The loss for the Rebels marks their 11th straight set back. They are still searching for their first win of 2025 and first since Dec. 14. However, on the brightside Rebels newcomer Brett Calhoon scored a pair of goals in just his second game with Red Deer.

Forward Ty Coupland got the Rebels on the board first early in the game. Just over two minutes into the game, Coupland fired a shot past the goaltender after the puck came to him on the left side following a backhand shot on net from Matthew Gard.

The Blades answered exactly two minutes later approximately five seconds into a powerplay. Defenceman Grayden Siepmann fired a shot on net that beat goaltender Chase Wutzke shortly after they won the faceoff.

Rebels forward Jaxon Fuder was handed a five-minute major penalty and a game misconduct for a hit from behind with a little over eight minutes left in the opening frame.

Fuder was a tough loss for the Rebels who are still without Kalan Lind (day-to-day), Ollie Josephson (day-to-day), Jhett Larson (week-to-week) and Peyton Shore (week-to-week).

Rebels retook the lead while on the penalty kill. Forward Brett Calhoon, who was signed by the Rebels four days ago after he was released by the Kelowna Rockets, scored a shorthanded goal by batting the puck out of the air before shooting it into the back of the net.

After a lengthy review by the officials it was ruled a good goal, his first as a Rebel and second point in as many games.

Calhoon, 20, from Kamloops, B.C. scored again just 3:07 into the second period. He ripped a shot past the goaltender from the middle-high slot to give the Rebels a 3-1 lead.

Just over 4:07 into the third period, Williams tipped a shot from David Lewandowski past Wutzke to bring Saskatoon within one.

While Rebels Matthew Gard was serving a penalty for roughing, Williams scored again to tie the game for Saskatoon on the powerplay with 13:30 left in the game.

Saskatoon had the overall edge on the man advantage going two-for-four on the powerplay. Meanwhile, Red Deer was held scoreless on two opportunities.

Red Deer will look to snap their losing skid on Saturday in Prince Albert, which is their final game of the road trip through Saskatchewan.

Puck drop is at 6 p.m. mountain time at the Art Hauser Centre. You can listen to the broadcast on 106.7 Rewind Radio.
