Red Deer RCMP warning public of fraudulent phone calls

Jan 16, 2025 | 11:46 AM

The Red Deer RCMP are warning the community of fraudulent phone calls.

This comes after local police received reports of fraudulent calls from individuals pretending to be bank employees.

The calls typically come from either a spoofed phone number or an unknown number. Once answered, the person says they’re a bank employee who then demands gift cards or cryptocurrency to help them remove unauthorized charges from their accounts.

RCMP recommend if you receive a similar phone call, it’s important to hang up the phone and contact the person or organization directly from a trusted phone number.

It’s also important to not post personal information online or social media, and to remember that bank institutions and government organizations will never ask for payments by cryptocurrency or gift cards.

Red Deer RCMP say if you’ve fallen victim to this or any other scam to contact them at 403-406-2200, as well as the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (www.antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca or 1-888-495-8501).
