Newcomer learn to skate event returns January 2

Dec 24, 2024 | 10:00 AM

The annual Care for Newcomers Learn to Skate program is making a return in January.

On Jan. 2, 2025, from 1 to 3 p.m. at Bower Ponds, the local organization will provide an opportunity for newcomers and their families to learn how to skate.

This event will mark the 14th year of the program, which began in 2012 at the request of a student who expressed a desire to learn how to skate.

Organizers say that many newcomer youth feel too embarrassed to try skating alongside their Canadian peers. This program allows them to practice with other youth who are also learning how to skate.

The event is free of charge and all equipment will be provided to them. Many who’ve taken part have been thankful for the opportunity and in addition to learning a new skill, it is described as a fun afternoon of enjoying the outdoors and meeting new people.

There will be volunteers skating around who will offer a helping hand to those who need it and skate fittings will take place indoors in the Fireside room, which will also be used as a place to warm up with a cup of hot chocolate.

Care for Newcomers would like to thank everyone who has helped make this event possible including the City of Red Deer, RCMP, Hockey Alberta, Red Deer Speed Skating Club, Bower Place Community Association, Bower Ponds and many more community volunteers.

Care for Newcomers has helped those new to Canada settle in Red Deer for over 40 years.
