Red Deer Games Foundation announces fall 2024 grant recipients

The Red Deer Games Foundation has announced recipients of its fall 2024 round of Athlete Development Grants.

These grants are awarded to Red Deer and area residents who have demonstrated a high level of ability and strong commitment to their sport.

Athletes also achieved competence at the international, national, provincial or regional level, and funds are meant to offset costs of training and equipment as they pursue their athletic endeavours.

Nathon Kettyle Kozuback – Red Deer Speedskating Club
Nathon is a member of the Red Deer Lions Speedskating Club who competes in both short and long track speedskating. He has had many personal bests this past season and has regained his No. 1 position nationally for his age in long track speedskating. Nathon qualified and attended both the 24/25 Canadian Neo-Junior Short and Long Track Championship held in November and December this year.

Hayden Matthews – Freestyle Ski
Hayden is a member of the Central Alberta Freestyle Club and took part in his very first FIS Event in Hintertux, Austria placing 36 this past November. He will be attending Canada Cup events in B.C. and Ontario as well the Junior Nationals in Quebec this year.

Eily Morrison – Track and Field
Eily is an accomplished track athlete participating with the Alberta Speed School. This past year she won the ASAA Provincial 100 metre championship, was a silver medalist at the Athletics Alberta Provincial Championships in the 200m, and the ASAA Central Zone champion in both the 100m and 200m. She was also a bronze medalist at the Alberta Summer Games in the 100m, and has attended the Canadian U20 qualifier. She will be training both locally and at a training camp in Mexico this winter.

Solomon Wynnyk – Snowboarding
Solomon, a member of the Riders on Board club, placed second at the Alberta Provincials in January 2024 in slopestyle men’s U18. He also attended the Air Nation Sunpeaks event in January 2024 where he placed 15th.

James Wiglesworth – Speedskating
James is a member of the Red Deer Lions Speedskating Club and over the past season, has earned a spot on the Provincial Speed Skating Alberta Development Team. He will attend the Canadian Junior Long Track Championships in Fort St. John and two Canada Cup events this year. He dedicates himself to his sport and along with his local training program, he travels to Calgary weekly to train with the Oval program at the Calgary Olympic Oval.

Sianna Freele – Track and Field
Sianne is a member of the Alberta Speed School and this year participated at the Canadian National U16 Championships in the 100m placing fifth. She also competed in the Athletics Alberta Provincial Championships in the 200m, placing second, and was a gold medalist at the Athletics Alberta Provincial Championships in the relay. Besides attending a training camp in Mexico this winter, Sianna hopes to also compete in the ASAA Zone championships, the ASAA Provincial Championships, the Team Alberta Western Canadian Team Trials, the Athletics Alberta Provincial Championships, the Canadian U18 Championships, and the Canadian U20 Championships.
