WCLC bringing awareness to impacts of underage lottery use

Dec 13, 2024 | 10:05 AM

The Western Canadian Lottery Corporation has joined the 2024 Gift Responsibly Campaign as a level one participant, which raises awareness about the dangers of underage lottery use.

The Corporation joins lotteries across North America and the world in the campaign which was organized by the National Council on Problem Gambling and supported by the North American Association of State and Provincial Lotteries.

“WCLC has been proud to participate in the Gift Responsibly Campaign in the past, and we are once again committed to supporting this important initiative in 2024,” said Kevin van Egdom, Director External and Stakeholder Relations in a media release. “Our hope is to help raise awareness about the risks of underage lottery use and to ensure a healthy, informed experience for all lottery players.”

Officials say research shows the earlier someone participates or is exposed to gambling in childhood, the more likely they’re to have a gambling problem when they’re older. This often comes in the form of lottery or scratch and win tickets given to youth by an adult who is unaware of the linked risks.

Throughout November and continuing through December the WCLC will bring awareness to the issue of underage lottery usage using social media, retailer communication, and terminal messaging.

“The potential long-term risks associated with underage gambling exposure cannot be understated,” said Keith Whyte, NCPG Executive Director.

“We applaud Western Canada Lottery Corporation for their commitment to raising awareness about the risks of youth gambling and for working to educate the community that lottery tickets are never appropriate gifts for children.”
