Christmas kicking off in Ponoka with downtown festival

The Town of Ponoka invites area residents to A Kickoff to Christmas in downtown Ponoka Nov. 15, where there will be plenty of holiday activities to enjoy.

Annual Santa Claus Parade

Colourful, holiday-themed floats decorated by local businesses and community groups will wind through downtown starting at 5:30 p.m. The Town will begin setting up temporary road closures along the parade route just before 5 p.m.

Beginning at the Ponoka Arena Complex (4410 54 Street), the route is as follows: north along 54 Street; east on 46 Avenue; north on 50 Street; west on 51 Avenue; south on 51 Street; west on 48 Avenue; and south on 54 Street back to the Arena.

Tree lighting and hot chocolate

After the parade is finished around 6:15 p.m., Santa Claus will come to the Town Christmas tree (48 Avenue and 51 Street) to hand out treats to young attendees. There will be a tree lighting ceremony featuring remarks from Ponoka Mayor Kevin Ferguson, Ponoka County, and event sponsors.

For those who can’t attend the parade and tree lighting in person, the Town will livestream th events on its Facebook page.

From about 6:30-8:15 p.m., the Rocky Mountain Symphony Orchestra will perform live music on a stage near the tree.

Following their performance, there will be a holiday-themed drone light show displayed over the Battle River Valley at about 8:15 p.m. It will be viewable from 50 Street downtown.

Finally, multiple local business will be participating in Moonlight Madness and the launch of the annual Passport to Christmas program by the Ponoka and District Chamber of Commerce.

Keep your eyes peeled for plenty of other holiday activities that will be bringing cheer to Ponoka over the next two months, such as:

  • The annual Christmas light display at Lions Centennial Park
  • The community-wide Christmas lights tour of festively decorated homes
  • Ponoka Festival of Trees from November 21-23 in support of the Ponoka & District Health Foundation. The Town of Ponoka will be sponsoring the Family Day Christmas Celebration on Saturday, November 23, from 9-11 a.m. and 1-3 p.m. Tickets are available online
  • The Holiday Train will roll into Ponoka once again on Thursday, December 11 at 4 p.m. with musical guests Magic! and Sofia Camara
  • The Holly Jolly Skate at the Ponoka Arena Complex on Saturday, December 21 from 6 to 8 p.m.
  • The New Year’s Eve Family Swim at the Ponoka Aquaplex from 4 to 7 p.m. sponsored by Home Church.
