Red Deer RCMP respond to collision with pedestrian downtown

A 68-year-old man suffered non-life-threatening injuries Friday after being hit by a pick-up truck downtown.

Alberta RCMP confirm the incident occurred just after 1 p.m. at the intersection of 49 Street and 50 Avenue (Little Gaetz).

A Nissan Titan truck was turning left to go east on 49 Street when it struck the man, who was using a walker, police say.

“Intersections in particular have extra risks as drivers not only have to watch out for other vehicles but also pedestrians that may be crossing through,” says Cpl. Troy Savinkoff. “We ask that drivers take extra time when crossing through intersections to ensure that it is safe to proceed. That extra second taken before proceeding can save a life.”

The driver of the truck was issued a $162 violation ticket under section 52 of the Use of Highway and Rules of the Road Regulation.

RCMP were not clear if the man who was struck had the right of way.
