Roping team featuring Ponoka rider banks back-to-back wins

Team roping tandem header Kash Bonnett, of Ponoka, and heeler Logan Spady have completely turned around their rodeo standing after back-to-back success the weekend of August 9-11.

The team was hovering around 12th place, the final qualifying spot, before the CPRA rodeo trail made its way to the Field of Dreams Stampede in La Crete, Alta., and the Dawson Creek (B.C.) Exhibition and Stampede for two SMS Equipment Pro Tour rodeos.

In La Crete, the duo reached the winner’s circle with a 5.9 second run that won them $2436 each. In Dawson Creek, a 5.7 second winning run earned them $2767. These wins pushed the team ahead several spots in the season leaderboard and leaves them in a solid position for the Canadian Finals Rodeo (CFR) as the 2024 season starts coming to a close.

The roping team previously competed together in 2021 and 2022, and has a few specific goals for seasons on both sides of the Canada-U.S. border. They hope to be in the top five in Canada when they head to Edmonton for CFR 50, in the top 35 in the United States to qualify for winter rodeos, and to win a Canadian team roping title.

“That’s kind of the main focus every year [the Canadian title]. Everything else is kind of a bonus, I guess,” Spady said.

Only nine of the remaining events will count towards the 2024 CFR from October 2-5. Rodeos after Labour Day weekend are part of the 2025 season.

Reflecting on the season so far, Spady shared, “It’s been awesome. We had a good spring, then it was a little slow in June, but we’ve been catching a lot of steers lately. There’s so much money to be won and so many good rodeos in August, it’s a good time to get hot.”

This fall, the pair will be travelling back and forth between Canada and the U.S. as they continue to try to reach their goals.

Progress could be made as early as this weekend, August 16-18, as the Canadian Professional Rodeo Association (CPRA) schedule should take the duo to the Pincher Creek (Alta.) Pro Rodeo and Cranbrook (B.C.) Pro Rodeo.
