UPDATED: Red Deer temporarily closes Discovery Canyon due to water concerns

Jul 26, 2024 | 2:04 PM

Red Deer’s Discovery Canyon is facing an unforeseen closure due to concerns about water quality.

This was brought on by AHS testing that detected elevated levels of fecal bacteria. The City clarifies that the prolonged heat exacerbated the issue.

AHS officials say that at the current levels, gastrointestinal illness may result from ingestion of the water.

AHS has not mandated a closure, however River Bend and the City have determined the action is appropriate on a precautionary basis. AHS is advising the public not to swim or wade in this beach area, effective immediately, until further notice.

“We understand this closure may cause an inconvenience, but the safety of our guests is our top priority,” said Rob MacPherson, General Manager of River Bend Golf and Recreation Society. “We are monitoring the situation closely and will provide updates as soon as a reopening date is available.”

The City says that for people who’ve used the area over the last few days, there is no reason to be concerned, emphasizing that this is being done out of an abundance of caution. Closure allows the pumps to work faster, they add.

To restore the water quality, water pumping will occur. This may seem that the water feature is functional, however the site remains closed until further notice.

Both River Bend and the City of Red Deer appreciates the public’s understanding and cooperation during this time. AHS says Environmental Public Health officers will continue to monitor the water at the facility.
