Rocky Mountain House hosting 2024 Alberta Women’s Senior Golf Tournament

Jul 23, 2024 | 10:19 AM

The Pine Hills Golf Course near Rocky Mountain House will be the site of the Alberta Golf 2024 Alberta Women’s Senior Championship.

Organizers say over 45 golfers have signed up for the tournament which is open to women age 50-plus.

Within that 50-plus group, organizers say there will be championships for different age categories such as young birds- those who have just turned 50, also ages 55-59, ages 60-65, and the diamond division, which are those 65-plus.

Of the four competitions within the event, one overall champion will be crowned, say organizers, and the top three will represent Alberta at the National Championship.

The National Women’s Senior Championship will be held Aug. 27-29 at The Club at North Halton in Georgetown, Ontario.

John Deneer, director of competition and athlete development with Alberta Golf says the organization has been holding tournaments since 1912, including many tournaments over the years at Pine Hills.

Among the tournaments hosted at Pine Hills is the national Golf Canada’s NextGen tournament, as well as previous Alberta Women’s Senior Championships.

“The course is well received by the women, the volunteers, we’ve been (at Pine Hills) before with this event specifically,” says Deneer. “Pine Hills is a great course people know can host a championship. We want to go to golf courses that embrace the opportunity and show off their golf course, and Pine Hills does that every time we’re there.”

Deneer describes the 2024 Alberta Golf season so far as ‘wild’, citing weather challenges such as participants battling cold, rain and extreme heat.

Central Alberta Golfers have been well-represented on Alberta Golf tournaments so far this year, with Red Deer’s Eileen Park winning the Alberta Women’s Amateur Championship.

Deneer adds that whatever community a Golf Alberta tournament is held, he notices a bump to the local economy, such as full hotel rooms.

“We love getting out to the rural courses and communities outside of the major centres in the province, it’s a fantastic experience for us as an association,” says Deneer.

Organizers say spectators are welcome to come watch the golf action as onlookers positively add to the atmosphere of the tournament. It is free for spectators to attend.

The tournament in Rocky will be held July 23 to July 25.

Sundre hosted the 2023 edition of the tournament which featured Sundre golfer Marg Bergsma.
