Grey Wooded Forage Association and Battle River Research Group are proud to announce Cover Cropping and Grain Farming field day hosted by Kettle Ridge Organics.

Event Details:

Date: July 10, 2024
Time: 10 a.m.– 3 p.m.
Location: 40008 Range Rd 240, Lacombe County

Cover cropping is increasingly recognized as a valuable practice in modern grain farming, offering numerous benefits ranging from soil health improvement to weed suppression and nutrient management. For grain farmers looking to integrate cover cropping into their operations, understanding where to start is crucial for maximizing these benefits and ensuring successful implementation.

Chris Simeniuk (Alix, Alberta) and his wife Leah run Kettle Ridge Organics, a certified organic grain farm. Prior to converting to organic in 2015 Chris’s farm was using min-till conventional practices such as direct seeding and chemical weed control. Recognizing that the organic practices rely on more tillage for weed control, Chris has been working on methods to reduce/offset tillage impacts while maintaining adequate weed control and crop yields. Cover crops have played a key role.

“There’s lots of noise telling farmers to ‘do cover crops’. That’s like saying ‘do farming’. It’s too broad of term. Our field day is intended to share our learnings and help provide a starting point on how to ‘do cover crops”, says Chris.

Thanks to generous support from RDAR, Organic Alberta and General Seed Company, admission to the event is free and includes lunch.
