BCHL releases 2024/25 regular season schedule

Jun 22, 2024 | 10:24 AM

The BC Hockey League has released its regular season schedule for 2024/25, the first with five teams from Alberta fully incorporated.

That includes the Blackfalds Bulldogs, which will be joined in the new Interior East Division by their four Alberta counterparts from Brooks, Sherwood Park, Okotoks and Spruce Grove, as well as the Cranbrook Bucks.

“2024-25 is set to be a monumental season for the BCHL, in more ways than one,” says Commissioner Steven Cocker. “The full integration of our five new members, soon-to-be-announced event alliances and an elite group of incoming athletes are going to set the stage for an incredible year.”

Blackfalds starts the season with three at home, including against Sherwood Park on Sept. 20, Spruce Grove on Sept. 21, and then the Penticton Vees on Sept. 28.

The Vees, who are perennial favourites, were runners-up in the BCHL last season, losing to the Surrey Eagles in the championship series. They are winners of two of the last three Fred Page Cup titles, however.

The Bulldogs will then head on the road for four straight against Cranbrook, Brooks, Surrey and Chilliwack.

With the league’s new alignment, the Interior East Division will not play against the Coastal West Division, which includes the Alberni Valley Bulldogs — so there will be no Bulldogs vs. Bulldogs action, at least not in the regular season.

The league confirms this is for travel reasons, and will alternate from season to season.

The schedule does not yet include the pre-season, as well as BCHL Showcase games (Oct. 13-17) or Road Show games (Feb. 15-16), all of which will be announced soon.

The league notes it experienced an 8.1 per cent increase in attendance last season, thanks in large part to more prime night games, meaning they occur on Fridays, Saturdays or team-preferred holidays.

This season features 91 per cent of games on prime nights.

News and notes from BCHL AGM earlier this month (per the BCHL):

  • The Board of Governors voted in favour of adding universal affiliates going forward, meaning that affiliate players from the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League (VIJHL) and Junior Prospects Hockey League (JPHL) may dress for any BCHL team during the year.

This new system will allow them to experience different league markets and organizations to better help them make a decision should they play in the BCHL full time in the future.

  • The Board of Governors also voted in favour of adopting a coaches challenge pilot at the 2024 BCHL Showcase. The pilot project will allow BCHL coaches to challenge plays that were not penalized, in order to assess a double-minor, major or match penalty. If the challenge does not meet the criteria, the challenging team will be assessed a minor penalty for Delay of Game.

If the challenge is successful, the challenging team will have the right to a second challenge in the game.

  • The BCHL has extended the contract of Commissioner Steven Cocker, as well as Vice President of Hockey Operations Brad Lazarowich.

The league has also hired a full-time Manager of Events, Connor Ewert, who began work in early May and will be focused on the continued growth of league events and properties.
