A local man involved in a fatal head-on collision while driving a stolen vehicle north of Red Deer this winter has been sentenced to 180 days in jail.

However, 44-year-old Tyler Tyrone Palmantier, of Red Deer, was given credit for 90 days of pre-trial custody, leaving him 90 days left to serve as of his sentencing date on May 23, 2024. He was also given a firearms prohibition.

It was on March 12, 2024, at 5:01 a.m., when Red Deer RCMP received a report of a head-on collision on Highway 2A between Township Road 391 and 272.

Upon arrival, Mounties say the driver and sole occupant of one of the vehicles, a Ford focus, was deceased. Police identified the deceased as a 74-year-old Lacombe resident.

According to RCMP, the two occupants of the other vehicle, a Lincoln MKZ, were located nearby. Both were taken to hospital where they were treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Mounties say the vehicle they were inside had been reported stolen during a car-jacking on March 7, 2024, in Red Deer. Additionally, RCMP located a loaded SKS rifle in the ditch which had been discarded by the driver after the collision.

Mounties initial evidence indicated the deceased was driving a southbound Ford Focus when they crossed over the centre line into northbound traffic, striking the MKZ head-on.

RCMP charged the driver of the Lincoln MKZ, Tyler Tyrone Palmantier, with:

  • Possession of stolen property over $5000
  • Possession of a controlled substance (Methamphetamine)
  • Weapons offences (x3)

Police say the passenger of the Lincoln MKZ was released without charges.
