EXHIBITION GAME GOES MAY 4

Central Alberta Buccaneers gearing up for competitive 2024 AFL season

Apr 24, 2024 | 10:48 AM

The Central Alberta Buccaneers are getting closer to what should be an exciting 2024 Alberta Football League (AFL) season.

The team’s six-game regular season schedule begins June 1, with subsequent games June 8, June 15, June 22, July 6 and July 13 (full schedule below).

Paul Jensen, team chairman and defensive lineman, who’s been with the club since 2016, says spots are open for guys to snag during the ongoing training camp.

“I’m really excited to usher in a new era of Buccaneers football. In 2021, we captured our first AFL title, and with that, a lot of veterans who’d been on the team for quite some time kind of took that as a chance to take a ride off into the sunset,” says Jensen.

“The 2022 and 2023 seasons were rebuild years, and now we have a fresh executive team, a really young roster and we’re looking to revitalize the Buccaneers.”

Jensen says competition will be stiff, especially with the Calgary Gators returning to the AFL after folding in 2017.

Training camp for the Bucs’ 23rd year began April 23, and continues with sessions on April 25, April 30 and May 2.

Camp closes with an exhibition game against Calgary on Saturday, May 4 at MEGlobal Athletic Park in Lacombe.

All four practices run from 7:30-9:30 p.m. with more details to come on the exhibition game. The morning of the May 4 game, players will be out at Sobey’s in Lacombe collecting donations for the Lacombe Food Bank.
