Fake gold jewelry scam going around Red Deer, RCMP warn

Apr 19, 2024 | 10:33 AM

Red Deer RCMP are warning residents about a jewelry scam making the rounds.

The warning comes as there’s been an uptick in local reports of scams involving gold.

RCMP say suspects have been approaching people in parking lots, gas stations or other public locations, offering gold jewelry for sale, as a gift, or as a trade for gas.

“The jewelry is not genuine and is offered at very low prices. The suspects often say that they have lost their bank card and are unable to access funds to continue their trip. Suspects are typically driving newer rental vehicles and sometimes have children with them,” police say.

“These types of incidents can be considered fraud or false pretences and are criminal offences. If you are approached by someone trying to sell gold jewelry, avoid getting involved and call your local police right away to report the incident. If possible, please provide any licence plate numbers or any photos of suspects or vehicles to help with the investigation.”
