Newly recruited family physician now accepting patients in Red Deer

Apr 1, 2024 | 3:23 PM

Officials with Alberta Health Services (AHS) say a newly recruited family physician is now available to provide care to Red Deer residents after opening a practice at Saint Mary Clinic.

AHS says Dr. Hamid Khalefa is a fully licensed family medicine physician who has started a full-time family medicine practice here after being recruited to the community. He is now accepting patients and can be reached at 403-342-2234. Previously, Dr. Khalefa had practised in Chetwynd, B.C., since 2021. He received his medical education at Mansoura University in Egypt.

“Family doctors are vital to the health of Alberta families and communities,” says Adriana LaGrange, Minister of Health and MLA for Red Deer-North. “Dr. Khalefa and his family are a welcome addition to Red Deer, and he is sure to be a great asset to our community.”

“Red Deer is the third largest city in the best province in Canada,” adds Jason Stephan, MLA for Red Deer-South. “Red Deer has many competitive advantages which make it an attractive place to live, work and raise a family. It is good to see medical professionals coming to Red Deer to serve families and individuals in our wonderful community.”

With the addition of Dr. Khalefa, AHS says Saint Mary Clinic now has 20 physicians serving the community.

“I love Alberta where my two little kids were born and raised, and where I first landed in this country,” says Dr. Khalefa. “I enjoy the outdoors and being close to nature, and the nearby Rocky Mountains offer a great chance for lots of activities.”

Dr. Khalefa enjoys lane and lake swimming, soccer, cycling, fishing, hunting and playing piano in his free time.

Alberta Health Services says it continues to recruit for physicians across the Central Zone to meet community needs. AHS says it has physician resource planners who are dedicated to identifying and pursuing international and domestic physician recruitment opportunities. Officials say they work closely with various community partners and organizations, such as local Health Advisory Councils, the Rural Health Professions Action Plan, and independent physician recruitment and retention committees.
