Spring 2024 Reel Movie Mondays begins April 8
The Red Deer Museum + Art Gallery (MAG)’s Spring 2024 season of Reel Movie Mondays will open strong with the highly anticipated animated film, The Peasants on April 8, 2024, starting 6:30 p.m. at Carnival Cinemas.
From the creators of the Oscar-nominated Loving Vincent and based on the Nobel Prize-winning novel of the same title, The Peasants is a cinematic pageant about a 19th century Polish village, where a beautiful maiden marries a widowed landowner while nursing a burning love for his son.
The film that almost wasn’t employed over 100 painting animators in four studios across Poland, Serbia, Lithuania, and Ukraine. When war broke out in Ukraine, their studio was shut down for 6 months with only the female painters being able to evacuate to Poland. After fighting moved away from the capital, the studio reopened for the male animators who were not allowed to leave the country to resume working on the film. Beyond the art, their work was challenged by frequent power outages caused by the bombing of critical infrastructure.
Before animating, live-action footage of the actors was shot in Warsaw in Fall of 2020 during a lull in the Covid-19 pandemic when restrictions were briefly lifted, but the shoot was under a strict sanitary regime and scenes that involved larger groups of people had to be put off for nearly a full year.
