59% of Albertans want carbon tax abolished: poll

A new survey suggests that the majority of Albertans want to completely eliminate the federal carbon tax.

The Angus Reid Institute polled 1,602 Canadian adults, including 155 residents of Alberta between March 20-22, 2024.

Among all Canadians surveyed, 40 per cent said they would abolish the carbon tax, 11 per cent would lower it, 27 per cent would maintain it at its current level, and 22 per cent wanted to go ahead with the planned increase in April.

Albertans were more strongly opposed to the levy as 59 per cent wanted to get rid of it entirely and nine per cent looked to lower it, while 16 per cent wanted to maintain it at its current level and 17 per cent think the increase should go ahead.

However, Angus Reid found that support in Alberta for raising the tax has gone up by five per cent from their last poll on the subject in November 2023.

Saskatchewan was the only province to be against the carbon tax to a higher degree than Alberta, as 61 per cent wanted it abolished.

As of the beginning of this year, the Government of Saskatchewan stopped collecting the carbon tax on all forms of home heating. It’s a decision that 71 per cent of survey respondents in Alberta agreed with.

Supporters of the Liberals, NDP, and Bloc Quebecois had the most favourable views of the carbon tax while three quarters of those who like the Conservatives say it should be eliminated.
