PLAYOFFS!!

The Red Deer Rebels have punched their ticket to the 2024 WHL Playoffs, presented by Nutrien. Outside of 2020 and 2021 when there was no postseason play due to the pandemic, the Rebels have now qualified for the playoffs every season since 2015 – the longest current streak in the Eastern Conference. Playoff ticket packages are on-sale now! Call Shaun Richer at the Rebels office (403-341-6000) or visit reddeerrebels.com for details.

LAST WEEK’S GAMES

The Rebels found themselves shorthanded due to injuries and roster rules for a pair of games versus the Lethbridge Hurricanes. Friday in Lethbridge, the Hurricanes pulled away with three third period goals for a 5-2 win over the Rebels. Kai Uchacz and Talon Brigley scored for Red Deer in the loss. Saturday in Red Deer, the Hurricanes scored late in the third period then again in overtime for a 3-2 win at the Peavey Mart Centrium. Samuel Drancak and Matthew Gard scored for Red Deer in the loss. As a result, the Rebels finish with two wins and a shootout loss versus Lethbridge this season.

There are three games on tap for the Rebels in what is the final week of the regular season. Wednesday, the Rebels visit the Swift Current Broncos for a 7 p.m. tilt. Then this weekend, the Rebels finish off with a home-and-home series versus the Edmonton Oil Kings. The games go Saturday, March 23 at the Peavey Mart Centrium (7 p.m.) and Sunday at Rogers Place in Edmonton (4 p.m.).

UCHACZ RED DEER’S MALE ATHLETE OF THE YEAR

Red Deer Rebels captain Kai Uchacz is the 2023 Red Deer Advocate Male Athlete of the Year. In the 2023 calendar year, Uchacz was one of the WHL’s most consistent goal scorers, sniping 51 goals between the end of the 2022-23 season, playoffs and the first half of the 2023-24 campaign. His 50 regular season goals in 2022-23 were second in the WHL behind only Connor Bedard. After winning the team’s Most Valuable Player honour and Humanitarian of the Year honour for 2022-23, he was named the Rebels captain for the 2023-24 season. Uchacz was honoured with the 2023 Red Deer Advocate Male Athlete of the Year prior to Saturday’s home game at the Peavey Mart Centrium.

ALRIGHT, HAMILTON

Beckett Hamilton, the club’s first round pick, 18th overall at the 2023 WHL Prospects Draft, made his debut with the Rebels last Friday at Lethbridge. Hamilton had an outstanding season with the Warman Wildcats with 55 points in 44 games, tied for sixth in league scoring in the Saskatchewan U18 AAA circuit. The Humboldt, SK native is the great-nephew of Kelowna Rockets Owner, President, and General Manager Bruce Hamilton. His father Lee Hamilton played in the WHL for Lethbridge, Medicine Hat and Kelowna from 1993-97.
