hammering down a berth at olympic trials

Peterman & Gallant hope to keep Olympics dream alive with strong showing at Mixed Doubles Championship

Red Deer’s Jocelyn Peterman is back at it with her mixed doubles partner and husband Brett Gallant [Charlottetown, PEI] starting this Sunday at the Canadian Mixed Doubles Curling Championship in Fredericton.

The pair are seeking a record-extending third Canadian mixed doubles title, their last championship victory at this tournament coming in 2019, also in the New Brunswick capital.

They placed second in 2023, losing to Jennifer Jones and Brent Laing, who are again in the field, though a different pool.

Speaking to rdnewsNOW on Saturday, Peterman said the two of them are motivated to win after disappointing results at the recent Scotties and Brier.

“We’ve had a lot of success at this event when we’ve played together and now that we’re living in the same province, we get to train together a little more often. So that will help,” the 30-year-old says of their training in Chestermere, AB.

This week’s winning team leaves with $35,000, with $20,000 and $17,000 set aside for second and third.

But equally as important, the top three teams at this event earn a berth into the 2025 Canadian Mixed Doubles Trials (Dec. 30 to Jan. 4) in Nova Scotia, the winner of which will represent Canada at the 2026 Olympics in Italy.

As well, the winner of this week’s event will represent Canada at the 2024 World Mixed Doubles Curling Championship in Ostersund, Sweden, from April 20-27.

“We obviously want to do well in Fredericton and hopefully get the chance to represent Canada at another world championship. We’ve played quite a bit together for a number of years,” she says further of being prepared to take on a tough field of 31 other teams.

“The Olympics and representing Canada is a huge goal for us, even more so now that Curling Canada has changed things for this Olympic cycle where we’re allowed to compete in both [doubles and team curling]. If we can lock up a spot at trials in December and then a spot at the Olympics, that opportunity to go back there [to the Olympics] would be really special. It’s something we really want to do.”
