Board approves 3-year Capital Plan

The Chinook’s Edge Board of Trustees approved the 3-year Capital Plan for 2025 to 2028. The plan will be submitted to the provincial government. The government uses plans from all of the public school divisions when it decides which capital projects it will fund. The top five items in the Chinook’s Edge Capital Plan include:

1. New Grade 10-12 high school in Sylvan Lake

2. Modernization of Innisfail High School

3. New elementary school in Olds

5. New middle school in Carstairs or a modernization of Hugh Sutherland School

Prioritizing projects in the capital plan is based on considerations including historical enrollment trends, current utilization rates, and projected growth. The full capital plan, including background information about the need for each project, will be posted on the Chinook’s Edge website.

Board reviews Transportation quarterly update

The Board received the Transportation quarterly update. Highlights include: a recommendation to continue a discounting fees for early registration (implemented for the first time in September 2023), the move of the Sylvan Lake bus loop (where students riding the bus from rural areas transfer to other buses to take them to their school) from Ecole H.J. Cody High School to Ecole Fox Run School has been successful, bus evacuations are scheduled for April, and the current fleet of Chinook’s Edge buses is 110.

Trustees look forward to meeting with the Town of Sylvan Lake

The Board is meeting with the Town of Sylvan Lake council on March 26, 2024. The Board regularly meets with municipal partners to discuss ways the Board can work with communities. On March 26, trustees are looking forward to discussing the proposed new high school in Sylvan Lake, and how Chinook’s Edge and the Town can work together.

Board decides how it will support parent attendance at future ASCA conferences

The Board’s governance committee discussed support for parents wishing to attend the Alberta School Councils Association conference. The Board approved an annual budget of up to $12,000, and will consider approving a mix of attendees who are new to the conference and some who have attended in the past, with the intent to share the opportunity throughout the division.

Trustees approve updated code of conduct

The Board has approved an updated Board Code of Conduct. The Code of Conduct complies with legislation and defines specific expectations for trustee behavior in areas such as conflicts of interest, confidential information, conduct at meetings, external communication and social media, discrimination and harassment, how administration should be treated, the use of school division property, responding to gifts, and elections. It also sets out possible remedial actions, and formal and informal complaint processes. The policy will be updated on the Chinook’s Edge website.
