RDP Athletics Athletes of the Week

Red Deer Polytechnic (RDP) Athletics has announced Rachel Perry (Queens Volleyball) and Chance Longjohn (Kings Hockey) as the RDP Athletes of the Week:

Rachel Perry – Queens Volleyball Program – Business Diploma (3rd year) Hometown – Grande Prairie, AB

Rachel Perry made an impact for the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens Volleyball team at the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Women’s Volleyball National Championship. In the quarter-finals, the third-year outside hitter contributed seven kills, five digs, four aces, two blocks and one assist in the Queens’ three set victory over the Humber Hawks.

Grande Prairie’s Perry led the RDP Queens with 19 points against the Vancouver Island University (VIU) Mariners in the semi-finals. Despite the Mariners edging the Queens in five sets, Perry had 12 kills with an impressive 0.417 hitting percentage. She added seven blocks and five digs. Perry was named the 4imprint Queens Player of the Match.

In the bronze semi-finals, Perry had a team-high 13 kills against the Nordiques de Lionel-Groulx. Perry, who is a Business Diploma student, added 10 digs, one block and one assist in the Nordiques’ four set decision.

At the closing ceremonies, Perry was named to the Championship Second All-Star team.

Chance Longjohn – Kings Hockey Program – Bachelor of Education Middle Years (5th year) Hometown – Maskwacis, AB

Captain Chance Longjohn played a key role in helping the RDP Kings Hockey team defeat the University of Alberta Augustana Vikings in the best-of-three semi-final. In game one, Longjohn assisted on the Kings’ first goal, which was a power play marker. When the Kings trailed the Vikings 2-1 in the second period, the talented fifth-year forward scored a nice goal to even the contest 2-2. The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings eventually won 3-2 at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre.

Longjohn, who is a Bachelor of Education Middle Years student, had another strong game in Camrose. He scored the Polytechnic’s second goal shorthanded. Longjohn led by example, working hard and playing a solid 200-foot game. The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings defeated the U of A Augustana Vikings 6-2 and advanced to the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Men’s Hockey Championship.

The RDP Kings will face the Concordia University Thunder in the best-of-five finals, beginning Friday, March 15.
