Red Deer Polytechnic Athletics Weekend Recap

This past week, three Red Deer Polytechnic (RDP) teams won medals at Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Championships with the Kings Curling team earning gold, the Mixed Curling team picking up silver, and the Kings Volleyball squad solidifying bronze.

In Airdrie, the Queens finished fourth at the ACAC Curling Championships while the Queens Volleyball squad also placed fourth at the ACAC Championship in Lethbridge. The RDP Queens Basketball team nearly completed a comeback, but dropped its home playoff game. The Kings Basketball team won in Saskatchewan, but was downed by St. Mary’s two days later to end its season.

The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens Hockey team completed the regular season with a victory. The RDP Kings Hockey team split its final two regular season contests with the Briercrest College Clippers.

ACAC Basketball Playoffs

After trailing by 22 points at the half, the RDP Queens pulled within one point against the St. Mary’s University Lightning in the fourth quarter, but couldn’t fully close the gap. The Lightning picked up a 76-70 decision and advanced to the Final Four Tournament.

Sandra Garcia-Bernal was outstanding, contributing 23 points, five assists, five rebounds and five steals in the Queens’ final game of 2023/2024.

The RDP Kings defeated the Briercrest College Clippers 92-76 in Saskatchewan on Thursday. Tyrique Walters scored 19 points, tying starter Deandre Rowe for the Kings’ lead. RDP’s Jose Mauro contributed 11 points and 18 rebounds.

On Saturday, the Kings were downed 113-86 by the first place St. Mary’s University Lightning in Calgary, wrapping up their season. Mauro led the way offensively with 30 points. The Lightning advanced to the Final Four Tournament.

ACAC Curling Championships

During round robin play, the RDP Kings Curling team finished with a 1-2 record, but elevated its game when it mattered the most at Airdrie Curling Club. The Kings downed the NAIT Ooks in a semi-final draw and earned ACAC gold with a win over the Concordia University Thunder, who finished first during the round robin.

The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens went 0-3 during round robin play at the ACAC Curling Championships. In the bronze medal draw, the University of Alberta Augustana Vikings got by the Queens.

The RDP Mixed Curling team (2-1) ranked second during round robin competition. The RDP team defeated Lakeland College in its opening playoff round and advanced to the gold medal draw. As the RDP Mixed Curling team waited for its opponent, the Lakeland College Rustlers defeated the SAIT Trojans in a semi-final. In a rematch between the RDP Mixed Curling team and Rustlers, Lakeland College came out on top to pick up gold. The Red Deer Polytechnic team earned silver.

Hockey

The Queens Hockey team defeated the Olds College Broncos 3-1 in its final regular season game on Saturday. Rylee Mepham, Kyla Hansel and Red Deer’s Avery Lajeunesse scored for RDP. The Queens (19-6) finished second in the standings. They will face the third seed NAIT Ooks (17-8) in a best-of-three semi-final.

Avery Lajeunesse goal vs Olds (RDP Athletics)

On Friday, the Kings Hockey team was downed 5-3 by the Briercrest College Clippers. Holden Knights, Kevin Minnoch and Nolan Doell found the back of the net for the Kings. Kristian Lyon, a Business Administration General Management student, made 22 saves for the Polytechnic.

The RDP Kings earned a 6-1 victory over the Clippers in Saturday’s rematch. Kings forward Jacob Wozney had a hat trick. Sylvan Lake’s Hayden Clayton contributed a pair of goals and captain Chance Longjohn added one goal for the Polytechnic. Goaltender Arik Weersink turned aside 21 shots in the win. The Kings (15-9) finished second in ACAC Men’s Hockey, earning a bye to the best-of-three semi-finals.

ACAC Volleyball Championships

The Queens Volleyball team placed fourth at the ACAC Women’s Volleyball Championship in Lethbridge. In the bronze medal match, the Briercrest College Clippers downed the Queens in three sets (25-22, 25-16 and 25-18). Outside hitter Jaiden Ferguson totaled 12 kills, five digs and a block for the Queens. RDP Queens setter Emma Letkeman contributed 16 assists and was named to the All-Tournament team.

In their opening match of the championship, the RDP Queens swept The King’s University Eagles (25-16, 25-23 and 25-12). Letkeman accumulated 19 assists, four digs, two aces and two kills. Red Deer’s Ferguson totaled 12 kills (0.579), eight digs and three of the team’s nine aces.

With an opportunity to advance to the gold medal match, the Queens were defeated by the Lakeland College Rustlers in four sets (25-18, 14-25, 13-25 and 20-25). Queens libero Francesca Sandini had 15 digs and two assists.

The Queens will host the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Women’s Volleyball National Championship from March 6-9 at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre.

The RDP Kings Volleyball team earned bronze with a five set victory over the Lakeland College Rustlers at the ACAC Men’s Volleyball Championship (25-17, 15-25, 25-21, 23-25 and 15-11). Sylvan Lake’s Noah Carlson led the RDP offence with 24 kills and was named to the ACAC Men’s Volleyball Championship All-Tournament team. Setter Tom Wass had 51 assists. Libero JJ Graham recorded 14 digs.

In their first match, the Kings were down two sets to one and rallied to defeat The King’s University Eagles in five sets (19-25, 25-14, 23-25, 25-17 and 15-12). Carlson was outstanding, totaling 24 kills (0.333), five blocks, four digs and an assist. Wass had 49 assists.

Then the RDP Kings were edged by the NAIT Ooks in five sets (25-23, 26-24, 23-25, 16-25 and 20-22), placing them in the bronze medal match. Carlson had 32 kills. Colby Nemeth, who is a Bachelor of Commerce student from Red Deer, added 23 kills.
