This week in Red Deer Polytechnic Athletics

This week, the Queens Hockey team will face-off against the NAIT Ooks in a home-and-home series. The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings and Queens Basketball teams will play road games against the Lakeland College Rustlers and Keyano College Huskies. In their lone weekend matches, the RDP Volleyball squads will challenge the Broncos at Olds College.

Here is a summary of the games this week:

Hockey

Queens (17-5) vs NAIT (16-5) | Gary W. Harris Canada Game Centre | Friday, February 16 | 7 pm

RDP Queens at NAIT | Saturday, February 17 | 6 pm

The second place Red Deer Polytechnic Queens Hockey team will compete against the NAIT Ooks twice. The Ooks rank third in the league. The RDP Queens previously won all three games against the Ooks this season.

The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens have the second most potent offence (3.64 goals per game) and stingiest defence (1.12 goals against) in ACAC Women’s Hockey. Queens captain Avery Lajeunesse (Bachelor of Education Elementary) leads the team with 19 points (nine goals and 10 assists) over 20 games.

After Saturday’s game, the Queens have one more game left in the regular season.

Basketball

Red Deer Polytechnic Queens (16-3) at Lakeland College (18-0) | Friday, February 16 | 6 pm

The RDP Queens will look to halt the 18 game winning streak of the north’s first place Lakeland College Rustlers on the road. This will be the first time that the Queens will play the Rustlers during regular season competition this year.

Queens second-year forward Peighton Melton (Bachelor of Arts in Multidisciplinary Studies) leads the league with a 62.9 field goal percentage. Lakeland’s Hineaupounamu Nuku ranks eighth in ACAC scoring, averaging 15.6 points per game.

The RDP Queens sit second in the ACAC South Division.

RDP Queens at Keyano College | Saturday, February 17 | 6 pm

In the final regular season game, the Queens will challenge the north’s fifth place Keyano College Huskies (7-11) in Fort McMurray.

The top five teams from both the North and South Divisions will qualify for the divisional playoffs. The top two teams from each division will advance to the ACAC Women’s Final Four Basketball Tournament.

The first place team in the South Division will host the Women’s Final Four Basketball Tournament from February 23 to March 2.

RDP Kings (12-7) at Lakeland College (10-8 ) | Friday, February 16 | 8 pm

The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings will play the Lakeland College Rustlers on the road. Brazil’s Jose Mauro sits fourth in the league, averaging 10.7 rebounds per game for the Kings.

The RDP Kings are third in the south. Lakeland College is second in the north.

Kings at Keyano College (15-3) | Saturday, February 17 | 8 pm

In the final regular season contest, the Kings will tip-off against the Keyano College Huskies on the road. The Huskies are first in the ACAC North Division.

The top five teams from both divisions will qualify for the divisional playoffs. The top two teams from each division will advance to the ACAC Men’s Final Four Basketball Tournament.

The first place team in the North Division will host the Men’s Final Four Basketball Tournament from February 23 to March 2.

Volleyball

Red Deer Polytechnic Queens (12-6) at Olds College (2-16) | Saturday, February 17 | 6 pm

The third place RDP Queens will wrap up the regular season with a match against the sixth place Broncos in Olds. Queens outside hitter Emma Holmes ranks eighth in the league with a 0.331 hitting percentage.

Earlier in the season, the Queens defeated the Broncos in three sets.

The top four teams from both the North and South Divisions will qualify for the ACAC Championship in Lethbridge from February 22-24. The Queens have already qualified for the postseason.

RDP Kings (15-3) at Olds College (8-10) | Saturday, February 17 | 8 pm

In their final regular season game, the first place Red Deer Polytechnic Kings will play the Olds College Broncos on the road. Sylvan Lake’s Noah Carlson has averaged 3.25 kills per set, ranking seventh in the league.

The Kings previously defeated the Broncos in five sets in the opening match of the season.

The RDP Kings have already qualified for ACAC Men’s Volleyball Championship in Olds from February 22-24.
