Alberta to join leaders at western governments meeting

Nov 10, 2023 | 5:14 PM

Officials with the Alberta government say MLAs Grant Hunter and Tany Yao will advance Alberta’s interests at the Council of State Governments West (CSG West) meeting from Nov. 12-15 in Los Angeles, Calif.

Alberta’s government says it is committed to working with its national and international partners to advance shared interests that can lead to new opportunities for people and businesses in Alberta and around the world.

During the four-day meeting, Hunter, MLA for Taber-Warner, and Yao, MLA for Fort McMurray-Wood Buffalo, are expected to engage with U.S. and Canadian officials and legislators to discuss shared concerns and learnings in areas such as trade and investment, energy security, hydrogen development, two-way trade between Alberta and the western U.S., and agriculture.

The MLAs are scheduled to attend the Executive Committee meeting and participate in sessions for the Westrends, Energy and Environment Committee, and the Agriculture and Water Committee. MLA Hunter will also co-chair the Canada Relations Committee.

“As our province continues to lead the charge in areas such as energy security, hydrogen development and environmental policy, it remains invaluable that we have a voice at the table,” says Grant Hunter, MLA for Taber-Warner. “I look forward to speaking to the numerous projects Alberta has underway, including our economic corridor initiative, which will allow for the accelerated development of critical infrastructure in northwest Canada and the United States.”

“These conferences are crucial to upholding the existing relationships we have with our neighbouring leaders and governing officials throughout North America,” adds Tany Yao, MLA for Fort McMurray-Wood Buffalo. “I am honoured to represent our government alongside MLA Hunter as we seek new ventures to improve our infrastructure, trade relations, investment opportunities and the economic future of Alberta.”

Established in 1947, the government says CSG West promotes cooperation and collaboration among its members, which include the governments of Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington State and Wyoming. Alberta, British Columbia and the U.S. territories of the Commonwealth of Guam, American Samoa and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands are associate members.

The annual gathering brings policymakers together to share knowledge and connect on common interests for economic and social growth in the western region such as agriculture and water, energy and the environment, education, health, housing and legislative oversight.
