Fatal crash near Blackfalds claims life of Joffre man

UPDATE: 6:06 p.m., Oct. 24, 2023

On October 23, 2023, at approximately 5:30 p.m. Alberta RCMP QEII Traffic Unit out of Ponoka responded to a motor vehicle collision in the northbound lane of Highway 2, near Township Road 400 in Lacombe County, near Blackfalds.

Mounties say preliminary investigation indicates, a semi-truck was travelling southbound on Highway 2 and went through the median ditch and cable barrier to enter the northbound lanes colliding head-on with a northbound pick-up truck.  Police say the 57-year-old male driver of the northbound pick-up, a resident of Joffre, was pronounced deceased on scene.

The investigation is still on going. RCMP send their condolences to the families and loved ones involved in this incident.

RCMP say no further updates will be provided.

Blackfalds RCMP advise the fatal collision northbound on Highway 2, near Township Road 400 in Lacombe County is now clear and the roadway has reopened.

Mounties say an update will be sent when more information becomes available.

Blackfalds RCMP are currently on scene of a fatal motor vehicle collision northbound on Highway 2, near Township Road 400 in Lacombe County, near Blackfalds.

Mounties say northbound lanes on Highway 2 are closed until further notice. The public is asked to avoid the area and seek alternate routes of travel.

Police say an RCMP Collision Analyst is on route to conduct their investigation.

An update will be sent out once the Highway is reopened.

OCT. 23, 2023, 6:13 p.m.

Ponoka RCMP are currently on scene of a 10-vehicle pile up on Highway 2 southbound near Township Road 392. Southbound QE11 south of junction Highway 597 near Blackfalds is closed.

No serious injuries reported and collision attributed to poor winter road conditions.

At this time, all southbound traffic is stopped. Southbound traffic is being re-routed to Highway 597 and Highway 2A. RCMP are requesting drivers take an alternate route.

An update will be sent when more information becomes available.

Innisfail RCMP advise that the Highway off ramp is now clear. RCMP would like to thank the public for their patience during these poor weather conditions.

Innisfail RCMP are advising that the roadway is currently blocked on Highway 2 northbound, just south of Highway 11 near Red Deer. Mounties say four semi-trucks are currently stuck on the northbound off ramp due to the icy roadway and are unable to climb the hill.

The public is asked to avoid the area and seek alternate routes of travel.

An update will be sent out once the Highway is reopened.
