Rebels beat Canes, improving to 2-3 on young season

Oct 7, 2023 | 10:12 PM

With a rocky 1-3 to start the season, the Red Deer Rebels came into their Saturday night matchup against division rival Lethbridge hoping to not fall too much further behind.

They achieved their mission on this night, winning 3-1 over the Hurricanes, improving their record to 2-3 while the Hurricanes move to 4-2.

Scoring summary

The Canes drew first blood in this one when Brayden Edwards (4th) scored at 13:23 of the first period. The goal came at even strength but followed penalty trouble by the Rebels who’d received a double minor for slew-footing and a too many men bench minor in the period already.

Down 1-0 in the second, the Rebels’ Ollie Josephson (2nd) drew his team even with a goal at 4:09.

Then just 1:49 later, Red Deer took the lead off a goal from Talon Brigley (2nd), and it was 2-1 after 40 minutes.

The Hurricanes pressured in the third, but Red Deer’s Frantisek Formanek (1st) put it away at 17:15 of the period.

In the win, Kyle Kelsey stopped 33 of 34, improving to 1-2 on the season. The Hurricanes’ Harrison Meneghin made 26 saves on 29 shots faced.
