Town of Penhold briefs: Public Works Manager retires; new trails for Community Hub

Jul 14, 2023 | 11:19 AM

The Town of Penhold shared news this week regarding the retirement of a long-standing employee, the awarding of a tender for their new trail system, and a by-election date for a town councillor.

The Town of Penhold says farewell to a long-serving staff member: Nancy McAteer.

Town officials say Public Works Manager Nancy McAteer is retiring at the end of the week after 26 years of service to the community.

The Town says McAteer joined Penhold when it was a much smaller community and has watched it grow three times in size. They say she has seen the community expand town boundaries to double the original size and double once more.

McAteer has seen the evolution of the South Red Deer Regional Wastewater System that carries effluent from Olds to Red Deer, serving all the communities along the way. The Town says the small well water system has become a state-of-the-art watering system, expanding by three times in size.

In recreational realms, McAteer has seen numerous new parks be developed, new playgrounds, a full-service RV campsite and a regional multiplex facility.

“Nancy achieved an incredible feat in a ‘man’s world’. Over the past 26 years, Nancy has committed herself to finding processes required to modernize operations providing quality products and the highest level of service in water and wastewater,” said Town officials in a release.

Town officials say not only has McAteer served on various boards as both a member and leader within the industry, she has also received prestigious awards recognizing her service in the water and wastewater field which has, and continues to benefit, individuals locally, regionally, and nationally.

“Nancy has used her education, experiences, and knowledge to share her passion for a better world and assist others in following the path to a higher quality of life through water and wastewater. Nancy, we wish you the very BEST in your retirement,” the town said in a release.

Town awards Border Paving to upgrade and develop new path systems.

Border Paving has been awarded the tender for development of 4.4 kilometers of new trails and upgrading current gravel pathways connecting areas throughout Penhold.

In addition, a bridge is to be developed over the water at the Community Hub location and additional lighting along its path system.
