Penhold town councillor calls it quits to pursue career in southern Alberta

A town council member in Penhold is resigning so that he can pursue a new career in southern Alberta, the Town says.

Mike Walsh has provided notice of his departure, effective immediately.

“I want to thank the residents of Penhold for putting their trust and faith in me as one of their representatives for the past 10 years,” Walsh said in a media release on Tuesday.

Walsh was first elected in 2013.

He was re-elected in 2017 with 497 votes, topping all 13 candidates who ran for town councillor.

In the 2021 election, Walsh received 461 votes, the fourth most of nine candidates.

Mayor Mike Yargeau had this to say on Walsh’s resignation:

“Councillor Walsh has done a tremendous job advocating for the residents of Penhold during his time on council. His sound reasoning and fiscal responsibility has helped see the town grow while holding the line on municipal taxes for multiple years.”

Walsh will be dearly missed, Yargeau added.

A by-election will be scheduled for this fall to fill the vacant seat. The next round of municipal elections across Alberta is in October 2025.
