Power outage affecting roughly 4,000 customers Tuesday caused by weather, City says

A weather-related power outage in Red Deer Tuesday evening left around 4,000 customers without power.

Utilities Manager for the City, Jim Jorgensen, said the department was first notified at around 6 p.m. via public phone calls that there was trouble in the system.

He says crews arrived around 6:15 p.m. and after troubleshooting, discovered branches on an overhead power line in front of 5401 48 Ave., corner of 54 St. and 48 Ave., in the downtown area near Central Middle School.

While there were reports of lightening in the area, Jorgensen believes the high winds may have caused some dead or dry branches to fall onto the line, causing the power failure. He anticipates branches were likely hot, potentially catching on fire while on the line, but confirmed that nothing spread beyond the immediate area.

This initial power outage, he says, affected roughly 300 customers in the eastern portion of downtown and some in the East Hill area. However, Jorgensen explained as part of their safety equipment to isolate the problem in a secure manner, a breaker for the main feed required a shut off, causing power outages for around 4,000 customers in the Parkvale, Waskasoo, and Woodlea neighbourhoods, among a few others.

He says crews worked quickly to turn the main switch back on at roughly 7 p.m. for the 4,000 customers.

Crews then replaced some blown fuses in their precise troubled locations and ensured there was no other damage before restoring power for the initial 300 customers at around 9 p.m., Jorgensen states.

“Always an important reminder to everybody is if they see trouble or issues with any sort of power lines, poles, those sorts of things, please stay clear, at least 10 metres, don’t go anywhere near it and call it in because we do rely a lot on the public’s calls,” he said.

Residents in Parkvale experienced another recent power outage roughly one month earlier. He confirmed those incidents are unrelated.

He explained for that outage, some individuals attempted to break into energized lines to steal copper.

“It does happen; it is an industry-wide phenomenon. It’s not just in Red Deer, it’s everywhere where people do try to get into the system and take some copper for salvage,” he said. “One of the things we need to remind people of is don’t go anywhere near energized anything because it can kill or seriously hurt.”

He ensured residents that great effort is required to access power lines as the security of the City’s infrastructure is of high importance.

For inquiries, residents can call the City’s electrical power main line during business hours at 403-342-8274. While the call will be transferred after hours, residents can also call the direct line at 403-348-5700.
