Red Deer man sentenced in local contraband bust

May 29, 2023 | 1:37 PM

A Red Deer man convicted of selling, transporting, delivering or distributing unpackaged tobacco products has been sentenced to a 90 day Conditional Sentence Order (CSO) and a $25,000 fine.

Chrys Andrew Tremblay, 45, was sentenced in Red Deer Court of King’s Bench following a trial earlier this month.

Tremblay was initially facing five charges after Mounties seized over a million illegal cigarettes, thousands in cash, a stolen vehicle, and cannabis contraband during multiple searches in multiple communities nearly two years ago.

It was on Aug. 27, 2021, when Red Deer RCMP’s GIS drug team executed search warrants at three properties in Red Deer, Lacombe County and Morningside, Alberta.

Police alleged a two-month investigation revealed a wholesale supplier of contraband tobacco products was operating out of Red Deer, distributing to numerous locations throughout Alberta. Search warrants were executed on three properties associated to the suspect, with the assistance of Red Deer RCMP’s Property/Intel team and Ponoka RCMP.

At the three locations, RCMP seized 1.35 million illegal cigarettes, approximately $14,000 in cash, a stolen Dodge Challenger, and contraband cannabis products. The retail value of the seized cigarettes was said to be over $1 million.
