That would mean Red Deer is down three ambulances from its day-to-day operating fleet of six, but one backup ambulance has been activated, and two more have been brought in from southern Alberta to return the city to its typical complement.

“Any time we have an extraordinary event like this, the City of Red Deer will step up where we can to assist, whether that’s a request for ambulances, fire fighters or incident management team members,” says White.

Three other members of RDES have been deployed with Canada Task Force 2 — a national disaster response team — to Yellowhead County.

Meantime, White says residents of central Alberta need to be “ultra-cautious” when it comes to fires locally, particularly with fire bans in place all over, including in the city of Red Deer.

“We want the public to be acutely aware of how tinder dry conditions are, not just in forested areas, but in prairie regions and grasslands,” says White.

“We want them to use extra caution with open flames, disposal of smoking materials, and use of off-highway all-terrain vehicles, because we’re seeing fires in our grasslands and forests that are starting quickly and rapidly going out of control, then threatening structures, communities and civilian populations.”
