U18AA Sutter Fund Chiefs win provincial gold

It was a phenomenal end to the season for the U18AA Red Deer Sutter Fund Chiefs, who became provincial champions.

After going 3-1 in the round robin, the team defeated the NCI Impact 1-0 to win the gold medal final in Leduc.

Karly Currie scored her second goal of the tournament with just 5:24 remaining, and Mackenzie Gould-Sharpe made 21 saves for the shutout.

Head Coach Cal McConnell, following his first year as coach, talked about the pride he has in his club.

“It was definitely a great experience, and it was great to see the composure of the girls down the stretch,” says McConnell. “They played extremely well, stayed focused, and they clearly wanted to win this thing.”

The team entered provincials on a hot streak, winning their final eight regular season games and all four playoff games.

Combine that with provincials, and the Chiefs went 16-1 over their last 17.

“We turned it on for the second half, everybody bought in, and the team culture and attitude was right,” McConnell adds. “Everyone played for each other, and a provincial title was the result.”

Red Deer qualified for the final by first beating Calgary Fire Red 2-1, then Edmonton 5-4, then winning 4-2 for their first victory of the tournament over NCI, and then lost to St. Albert 3-1.

Red Deer went 16-10-0-0 (48 points) in their AFHL regular season, third in the South Division behind Calgary Fire Red (66 points) and Calgary Fire White (52 points).

In four games versus Calgary Fire Red in the regular season, Red Deer won just once, but managed to top them when it mattered most.
