Hitmen stage late comeback in game two overtime win over Rebels

Apr 1, 2023 | 11:38 PM

In heartbreaking fashion, the Red Deer Rebels lost game two of their best-of-seven series to the Calgary Hitmen Saturday night at the Peavey Mart Centrium, 2-1 and late in the first overtime.

The result sends the two teams back to Cowtown locked at one game apiece, with Red Deer winning game one 3-0 on Friday.

Scoring summary

For more than 51 minutes Saturday, the Rebels and Hitmen played as even a game as you’ll see, and couldn’t solve each other’s goaltenders.

Through 40, Kyle Kelsey stopped 19 shots for Red Deer, while Brayden Peters turned away 17. That doesn’t include a goal Red Deer thought Kai Uchacz had scored, but was challenged, reviewed and deemed offside.

Then, at 11:20 of the third period, off a turnover at centre ice, Rebels d-man Christoffer Sedoff (1st) pivoted back toward the Calgary zone, hit the top of the circle, and sniped one past Peters to draw first blood.

With time winding down, the net empty, and victory in sight, Sean Tschigerl (1st) jammed one in to equalize at 18:23.

The remaining seconds of regulation ticked away, and the teams headed to sudden death — the Rebels leading on the shot clock 29-26.

Both teams had grade-A chances throughout the game, including in the extra frame.

Calgary had an opportunity to put it away in overtime when Carson Birnie took a tripping penalty at 13:42, but the Rebels’ stellar PK killed it off.

Moments later, as it looked like fans may get a second overtime, the Rebels coughed it up in their own zone, and David Adaszynski (1st) put it by a falling Kelsey, earning a hard-fought away split before heading back home for games three and four.

The Calgary win means the series is guaranteed a game five, back in Red Deer on Friday, April 7.

Post-game, Rebels Head Coach Steve Konowalchuk spoke about the loss.

“You want to win them all, but you’re not going to. So we’ll get back at it. There was good hockey there tonight, typical playoff hockey, you play until the end. It’s going to be a good series,” Konowalchuk remarked.

“Road or home, you play the team so many times, the more you do it, home ice loses its advantage. We just have to go in there, play our game and keep our heads up.”

Rebels Captain Jayden Grubbe also spoke to media post-game.

“Once you get into overtime, it can go either way. It’s always tight. This is nothing to worry about; it’s a series, and they’re a good team. We’re not expecting to go through the series with no adversity, so now we just reset. We played well, but there’s a couple things to tighten up,” says Grubbe.

“The legs weren’t bad (at the end). Obviously it gets tiring as you get later, but you keep shifts short. We’ve put in the work all season to be ready for this.”
